Becoming a Murderer What leads a person to murder? Is it jealousy or the desire for revenge? The book Holes, by Louis Sachar is the story of how a person becomes a murderer. Sachar reveals that love is a strong emotion that can change a person’s life. A fictional character, Katherine Barlow was the only school teacher in the small town of Green Lake, Texas. Katherine Barlow, later known as Kissin’ Kate’s life circumstances created a motive to drive her to pursue the life of an outlaw. Emotions and life experiences will affect future life decisions. One hundred and ten years ago at Green Lake, Texas, it was law that a Negro could not kiss a white woman. The sheriff was going to hang Sam for kissing Katherine.“‘I always get drunk before a hanging”’(Sachar 113). Katherine quickly found Sam and let him know the sheriff was going to hang him. She told him that someone must have seen them kissing. They got on to Sam’s boat and made it halfway across the river. Trout Walker, son of the richest man in the country, smashed his boat against Sam’s boat and shot and killed him in the water. Katherine was later rescued against her wishes. Her heart was broken. "Satan loves to fish in the troubled waters of a discontented heart. " This quote by Thomas Watson describes Abigail Williams in the drama The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Criminals in the world like to see blood or watch people die in a harsh way. Most of the time they are the ones killing because they have some kind of hatred in there life and they just go crazy and kill people.
“She would impart to me gems of Jim Crow wisdom” (Wright 2). In “The Ethics of Living Jim Crow,” Richard Wright, speaks of his own experiences growing up in the half century after slavery ended, and how the Jim Crow laws had an effect on them. Wright’s experiences support the idea that a black person could not live a life relatively free of conflict even if they adhered to the ethics of Jim Crow. The first experience that Wright describes came when he was only a young boy living in Arkansas. He and his friends had been throwing cinder blocks and they found themselves in a ‘war’ against a group of white boys.
Revenge: A Narrative and Scientific Perspective Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” and Browning’s “My Last Duchess” both revolve around revenge. We are introduced to men who swear vengeance on other characters. Yet, the mindsets of these men are, in some aspects, very different. To truly comprehend a story, we have to understand why authors make their characters behave the way they do in addition to the message being presented. In the case of “The Cask of Amontillado” and “My Last Duchess,” why do both narrators believe murder is totally necessary?
When characters break bread together, a bond is formed between the two. Over meals and coffee important discussions are held and important relationships are strengthened. Important decisions are also made regarding food, though not always good ones. Jefferson, during the robbery of Mr. Grope’s store, took money from the cash

“Why would anyone go to Camp Green Lake? Most campers weren’t given a choice. Camp Green Lake is a camp for bad boys” (Sachar 5). Have you done something bad? Come to Camp Green Lake! As you think, there’s a lake.
In the short story “Mrs. Buell”, Kate learns that everything is not as it seems through a series of events. When one considers certain factors such as abrupt personality change, encounters with unexpected people, and changes in first impression, it can be seen that there are many things to be discovered that may change our impression of one’s being. Kate is startled by Mrs. Buell’s actions when, she hurts her knee while walking into Mrs. Buell’s convenience store. Although, Mrs. Buell shows compassion towards her, Kate can’t quite believe that Mrs. Buell had shown any type of sympathy. This is evident when Kate assumes, “She was probably sorry now that she’d fixed my knee.
Humans live in a world where moral values are very clearly set determining what is good and what is bad. We know what scares us and how racism should be treated. Nevertheless, this was not the case back in Alabama during the 1950s. In the famous novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee narrates the lives of the people of Maycomb, Alabama, focusing on the story of Scout and Jem Finch, and the case of a said to be rape. In this emotion filled narrative, readers learn how life was back then not only in general, but for the separate social statuses that there was.
B. Now let's talk about what motivates a serial killer to kill. 1. Most of the things that drives people to kill oddly enough happens early On in their lives. 2.
Revenge can be a horrible emotion; it can sometimes lead people to do horrible things. By definition, Revenge means to get retribution for a wrongdoing done to you. In my opinion, revenge is mostly caused by fear and the overwhelming feeling of payback Throughout history, revenge, or vengeance, has been altered by several cultures and religions, and even the American culture. Though it often leads one to perform criminal acts, Howard argues that it is a necessary component in the functioning of society. He points out that revenge is a threat that acts as a disincentive to undeserved violence.
Katherine’s life is turned upside down after she is caught having a romantic relationship with the Negro onion man, Sam. She is traumatized when the school is later attacked by the townspeople and Sam is shot. Katherine then becomes an outlaw and kills the sheriff and gives him a kiss. This is how she gets the name Kissin’ Kate Barlow. After these event, Katherine’s attitude changed completely.
Holes by Louis Sachar was a very fascinating story. I honestly can stay I loved reading it and enjoyed every minute of it. I also had the honor of attending the theatrical performance of this story put on by Buena High School’s theater program in Sierra Vista, Arizona. Those kids did a great job portraying everything from the book and bringing it to life. Some of the things that occured in Holes were extraordinary for example the opening starts when a young Stanley Yelnats has been sent to a juvenile correction camp called Camp Green Lake.
The Change in Stanley “Stanley was from a poor family. He had never been to camp before.” (Sachar 5) Stanley doesn’t know what he will do at Camp Green Lake, and he doesn’t know he will change. Stanley goes from weak to confident because of how Sachar describes him digging his first hole, making a friend, and finding the suitcase.
In addition the scenes of violence and racism in the film Mississippi Burning affected my emotions leaving me speechless, disappointed about how 1964 once was. Witnessing factual history unfold in the film was devastating it is a crucial process to understand. The African Americans were innocent. Other individuals conducted harming particularly the African American race as a game, that they gained pleasure from. To start with it’s cruel and inhumane it is an additional insult to humanity.
The book that I have been reading recently is Holes by Louis Sachar. This book gives you tons of details and never leaves you hanging. There are many events that are big and life changing for my characters. Some of the main life events that have happened in my book is Stanley getting sent to Camp Green Lake for supposably stealing famous shoes from a homeless shelter. That day when he arrived at Camp Green Lake is when Stanley and Zero’s families lives changed forever.
