Hubert H. Humphrey once said, “The greatest gift in life is friendship, and I have received it.” This shows that friendship is extremely important. In the film, Holes, the director Andrew Davis shows us that people should stick together with their friends. The main characters, Stanley and Zero, support and together through difficult times. This shows us that friends stick together and help each other.
Throughout the movie, there are many examples of friendship where a group support and stick together through some very difficult times. First, there was the time when Zero and Stanley ran away from camp. Although Zero ran away first throughout the movie the watcher could see the guilt eat away at Stanley. Once when I went biking I rode down an unpaved road and sprained my ankle my friends helped me get back home. When I crashed my friends came immediately to me asking if I was okay. Also, they stuck with me the whole way and carried my bike back since I couldn’t. Through bringing me back home and carrying my bike for me my friends showed that friends stick together and help each other. Another example is when my friends and I went to West Edmonton Mall Waterpark. Throughout the entire time we were there we went to the same places. We also brought each other tubes so we could ride them down on some slides. This shows that my friends stuck together and helped each other during our time at the waterpark. Finally, once I had lost the keys to my house and my friend tried to help me find it. During the time when we were looking for my keys, my friend was extremely worried. What makes a good friend? According to World Book Online, friendship is a social relationship in which people help each other in times of need. This definition of friendship is evident in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck. The novella takes place during the Great Depression, a time when seeing two guys travelling around together like George and Lennie is rare. The film “Argo”, directed by Ben Affleck, re-enacted the events of the Canadian Caper during the Iranian Hostage Crisis (1979-1981) in Tehran, Iran. Not all 53 hostages were captured as six American diplomats escaped and were taken into the care of Ken Taylor, the Canadian Prime Minister at the time, in the Canadian embassy. Taylor and the Canadian government created a plan to help the diplomats escape, however, they needed an intelligence force to back them up, which they didn’t have. The C.I.A was contacted to help Canada get the diplomats back to Canada safely with fake Canadian passports. The C.I.A created the fake movie called “Argo” as well as a fake studio and script.
The need for friendship manifests itself throughout all civilizations of humanity, because humans are social creatures that learn and grow from interactions between each other. Throughout the beginning portion of the novel, Kirsten and August share a special friendship whether it be through looting abandoned houses together or sharing secrets (Mandel 39). For example, when the conductor tells Kirsten what the prophet had said to her and asks her to “keep it to herself,” Kirsten asks to share it with her friend August (64). Additionally, friendship provides companions to enjoy the highlights of life and commiserate through the valleys of life with. In John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men there are a lot of themes. The themes consist of friendship, loneliness, discrimination and dreams. All of these themes are important, and play immense role in the outcome at the end. The major theme is that friends stick together; unconditionally; this is demonstrated through Lennie and George's actions in Weed, in the bunk house, and in the aftermath of Curly's wife's death. One example of true friends sticking together is exemplified when George stays with Lennie after Lennie's actions in Weed.
