Home Depot was founded in 1978 by Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank. Along with investment banker Ken Langone and merchandising guru Pat Farrah. These three visionary had their sight on a one-stop shopping for the do-it yourselfer. They opened there first two Home Depot on June 22, 1979 in Atlanta Georgia. Home Depot is known as the largest home improvement specialty retailer and the 9th largest retailer in the world. Let’s define what leadership is and what it means to be a leader? Now that I have define what a leader/leadership is, let’s talk about Home Depot’s leadership. The question at hand is what type of leadership exist within Home Depot? Does Home Depot have a transformational, transactional or is it done by a committee/team leadership approach? The leadership roles within Home Depot varies. The company is dedicated to serve their customers and providing an excellent shopping experience. In order to maintain this experience Home Depot has in place a team of committed leaders, that believe in the company values. One thing that is at their forefront is their commitment to great customers service with this in mind, they believe it create value for all stakeholders. There eight core values still stands as a elements of their success today. I personally feel that Home Depot would not have stood the test of time if they did not have transformational leaders like Marcus, Blank, Blake and now Menear to motivate the company to achieve their highest level of performance. Many leaders are competent but few qualify as remarkable as those individual. Home Depot is a highly diverse business that is highly committed and decided to its customers. The leadership at Home Depot started with the inverted pyramid, customer and store associated at top and senior level management at the bottom. Their philosophy is “whatever-it takes” and delegates the frontline managers to lead “it is your business, your division, your market, your stores, your aisle and your customers (Home Depot 2009).” Finally , transformational leaders by definition seek to transform.
