Homeless Service Memo

Students at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School have started a new kind of public service. More than 50 young men from the all-boys school volunteer as pallbearers at funerals for homeless veterans, according to the Associated Press.

Thesis: Homeless people in America should be given access to government services like food donations, and healthcare because it would improve life for all citizens.

Specific purpose: To persuade my audience to be more involved in homelessness in Memphis TN.

The exercise to establish the number of homeless people in the United States is of critical significance. Homelessness poses immense challenges to efforts aimed at controlling infectious diseases and renders the homeless at immense risk of serious mental and physical health effects. This subject is particularly becomes sensitive on considering the significant number of homeless veterans in the US. Especially in the recent past, homelessness has emerged as a costly problem. In his seminal article in the New Yorker recounting a story of a homeless alcoholic man, Gladwell (2006) observed that homelessness costs the taxpayers considerably and focus ought to be given to housing provision and supportive care. According to Gladwell (2006),

Homelessness, while widely acknowledged, continues to be an ever-prevalent issue within society. This urged me to take action. In order to compromise an accurate, precise claim, I needed to heavily research and analyze the various aspects of this issue -- specifically regarding the causes of homelessness, addressing the stereotypes and stigmas surrounding it, and by finding solutions at a personal, local, and national level. Initially, I intended to include pathos as a primary theme throughout my sources, but I eventually found logos as a more prevalent, more central theme that appeared throughout each source. Presented primarily through statistics, logos stands as the central theme.

After all the things that homeless veterans have done for this country, they need more help.

A lot of America’s veterans are now having to live on the streets after coming home from combat. and a problem like this should not be occurring. There are close to 50,000 homeless veterans here in America. This is due to the lack of support networks for returning veterans and also the substandard pension veterans receive. There have been efforts to combat this problem but it is still a large problem all across America. Something needs to be done to really help these veterans and get them back on their feet.

The issue of homelessness in America has been evident since the early 1600’s. Across the country men, women and children spend their nights on the streets not knowing when or if they will ever find a permanent home. States and federal officials or city councils have tried to alleviate or at least reduce the number of homeless over the last several decades at a city, state or national level but it continues to be an ongoing problem. There is a multitude of factors that account for the growing homeless population that affects each state in the country differently. Though there are many contributing factors that contribute to the amount of people living on the street at any given night in the U.S. An effective way to address the problem of homelessness in America is to continue creating affordable housing, maintaining assistance programs, and continue creating workforce

Ms. Carlene Martinez was promoted to a GAIN Services Worker position effective 09/16/2017. She was assigned to the Southwest Family CalWORKs District, Homeless Case Management Program as a Homeless Case Manager (HCM) under the supervision of the rater.

Every individual has a different background and it is our job as educators to take that into consideration as we educate our students. While reading the articles and watching the film, I realized that not all students are fortunate enough to have a stable household and some may not even have a roof over their heads at night. I was in awe by the amount of homeless youth that are out on the streets of Chicago every night. In the film, The Homestretch, it stated that 2,000-3,000 homeless youth were out on the streets every night. It also stated 19,000 students are registered as homeless within Chicago public schools. This made me realize the challenges they go through just in one single day. I began to realize that education is not their number one priority, it is surviving through the night. How can we ask students to do homework at night, when they don’t even have a place to go to?

Growing up in a public housing development, I longed to one day help individuals from an underserved community obtain care. At this soup kitchen, my responsibilities included welcoming guests, serving food, waiting tables, and cleaning trays. I empathized with their excitement when watching them receive a hot cup of tea on a sub-freezing day or a book bag with a built-in trench coat on a stormy day. Having an opportunity to spend time with and learn from the diversity of the population that we served was invaluable. Each person had a unique story to tell and just wanted someone to hear it. The Dallas-area is home to a great majority of the Texas population. Citizens in the Dallas region are a unique and very powerful part of our Texas community and it is vital that we, as Texans, must protect our valuable ecosystem. As members of the JCPenney community outreach program, we strive to incorporate new ideas to help our metroplex thrive and grow. It is important to JCPenney to promote social responsibility and sustain community engagement among the Dallas area. We have designed an innovative way to aid the homeless within our greater Dallas area. We will strive to clothe and feed the homeless as well as get as many in-need individuals jobs to help build up our community as a whole. Our name will be recognized as the Dallas Homeless Relief. Our mission statement is, “To support and strengthen the community by providing supportive services to the homeless population”.

“Only 28.5 percent of Americans with identifiable mental illness seek services annually,” and of those 28.5% only 11% were receiving the necessary medication (Rosenheck). The veteran population is more likely to experience traumatic brain injuries and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) which are one of the most substantial risk factors for homelessness (Fact Sheet: Veteran Homelessness). Not only are many non-veterans not seeking medical treatment for their mental illnesses, but many veterans as well are also not seeking the same treatment. This is apparent since there are 50% of homeless veterans who have a serious mental illness, which is not including those who have a mental illness that is not as apparent or life altering. According to the Homeless Research Institute, veterans compose more of the homeless population than they do the civilian population, formulating only 11% of civilian life compared to 26% of homeless population (Veterans Inc.). Although not all veterans wear camouflage, all face similar struggles upon returning to civilian life. Unfortunately as they return to civilian life their needs hinder. As a result, veterans face a future of poverty, illness, and above all, homelessness. Homelessness occurs as an unfortunate and common future for veterans due to high unemployment and poor health.

Homelessness is a struggle that most people don’t know, or that people ignore because they frown on homeless people. These people frown on homeless people because the homeless are often unshaven ruff looking people that had a bad turn in life, this life changing event that turned them into what some people frown upon. These people are frowned upon by so many but the people that frown upon them have no idea what their going through.
