Many schools throughout the country have made the decision to discontinue homework for effective reasons. Although some argue that homework creates time management and study skills, the stress that comes with homework overruled this. Assigning homework to students is destructive because test scores lower, there is no free time to do new things, and it is stressful. Assigning homework to kids and teens makes their test scores weaken. Recently, a Duke University professor, named Harris Cooper conducted a study about homework.
Some of the many reasons why students hate homework is because they think homework should only be used as additional practice for students who need it, or to study for tests and quizzes when possible. Moreover, homework can be too overwhelming. It can cause fatigue, stress, and many other things. Finally, students have no time for this type of work. For many students, homework is a chore--mandatory, useless, painful. In addition to already-long school days, many more hours are spent by students at home, working on numerous, often unimportant, assignments. Students, already overworked, are given further stress; stress that leads to severe physical and mental consequences. Due to its length, inaccurate representation of student knowledge, insignificant impact on academics, elimination of free time, and damage on the physical and mental health of students, homework does not benefit students. Although common knowledge states that homework has a significant impact on academics, this impact has rarely been proven.
The problem is, homework given to students today does not fulfill its purpose. It’s just busy work. As the old Czech proverb expresses, “Too much of anything, is harmful”. The immense homework load on students takes away the opportunities to learn life lessons, takes away extra-curricular activities, and is very harmful to their development. Life lessons are something everyone must learn.
This happens a lot to other people. McPherson stated in his book Stressed Out in school that homework, “Creates Stress and anxiety.” (McPherson 40). No one should have to have this stress and anxiety at such a young age. When they come home, they need to be able to relax and pursue other interests.
Most people believe that homework is a waste of time that just stresses students because it is boring, but not everything in life has to be fun and perfect. It is not good to think that homework is a punishment because they help to improve new things or spend less time on technology like television, computer, internet, social networks, etc (see fig. 1). This kind of work that is given to a pupil is a collection of school work, which has to be done at home to help generate learning autonomy. All people who study at schools, colleges or universities, are required to do this assignment.
The most overused excuse is, “The teacher never taught us how to do that assignment.” Students cheat because the teacher is not teaching their students the unit, chapter or even what is going to be on the test thoroughly enough. If the teachers focused more on teaching the students the lesson for the day and less time on planning for future lessons than maybe some students would not need to cheat. Often times teachers grade other classes quiz or homework or use the time to get set up for the next class.The State puts too many requirements on teachers and there is not enough time to dedicate to actual teaching during the class
Homework also takes away from time that a kid could be spending with his or her family. Rather than spending time bonding and building strong family relationships, parents and children argue over homework. Time is taken away from important elements of daily life. This time isparticularly precious in families with two working parents whose time with their children is limited. This time could be better spent going out to dinner as a family, or doing other activities that most families are not able to do because the kids don 't have time to take a break from their homework schedule
In classes today, many teachers focus on tests and assignments, leaving little time to give their students to let their creative juices flow. Not only that, many teachers may give students assignments to be creative, but give less freedom and set many strict limits of their creativity (Soliman). While some school may offer creative opportunities, many schools do not approve of this because, it is not thought of as a core subject, most of the time budget cuts lead to no music and art class, and schools cannot fit time into the school day for subjects such as, art or music. One of the main reasons why creativity is struggling to spread through schools is many schools think of art and creativeness as not a major topic and rather focus on skills like math and language instead (Soliman). Worrying teachers focus on standardized test rather than innovation and imagination.
