Those who may be targeted to this type of bullying differentiate in their appearance, their behaviour and other physical traits or sometimes they have friends or family who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.
The image of the ‘ideal’ family became the norm for everyone to compare their lives with. The women were happy homemakers who enjoyed cleaning and caring for the children while their husbands went off to work. South Africa was ‘ on of the very first countries in the world to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and has one of the most progressive constitutions along with other legislation that outlaws discrimination based on sexual orientation in the workplace, and legalises same-sex marriages.
Homophobic bullying in schools can be problematic in a number of ways:
Children who experience this bullying have their education disrupted. They are unable to concentrate on lessons because of feelings of fear or anger. Their self-confidence is damaged and may never fulfil their academic potential.
It can be a particular problem for teenagers who are confused or unsure about their own developing sexuality. Some victims are driven to the edge of despair or beyond, with lasting consequences for their emotional health and development. Schools that ignore it, or deny its existence, are not helping young people to develop a concern for the welfare of minorities and tolerance of
These can also result to various forms of violence toward the LGBTQ individual from verbal and physical violence to neglect.
Jamie Nabozny was a typical middle school student who happened to be gay. The bullying started with some students calling him pejorative (CRAFT) names behind the teacher’s back, and sometimes, right in front of the teacher’s face. He put up with it for some time until attempting to commit suicide. He had to have his stomach pumped while his mother stood by with no idea of how how to help her son. Nabozny’s mother spoke to the middle school principal who dismissed her claims saying “boys will be boys”.
Through the higher risk of depression, anxiety and panic attacks, bullying can have a lasting effect on a child, causing them to have a damaged adulthood. The effect is seen whereas adults who were previously a victim and a bully are fifteen times as likely have panic attacks, 5 times greater risk for depression, and 10 times the chance more of suicidal thoughts than adults who were uninvolved in bullying. Nowadays, bullying has a different stance through social media, allowing kids to bully without even being in the same room as one another. With the increased times kids see or talk to their peers through the internet, having a bully close to them has the possibility to become very harmful. Bullying can cause the bullied person to bully others.

In October 12, 2010, Joel Burns made a public message towards the GLBT teens by sharing a personal story. He delivered an amazing message by sharing also those who’ve been victims of being portrayed as gay, bullying, and suicides. Inspiring the young GLBT (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender) teens that life does not end by the words of others who have an oppose mentality. Life does get better once you graduate high school, adventure throughout your adult life, finding someone you may last a lifetime, and building a foundation just like those individuals who singled you out for having different interest. “...that the things would get easier, please stick around, society will change, please live long enough to see it…”
A sensitive society has its difficulties for people to even speak out against the issue of bullying, without being interpreted a different way than its original meaning. Bullying and harassment have been a noticeable problem among students in schools worldwide, and still social acceptance and acknowledgment is a continuous issue. Teens are often picked on because of their sexual orientation/preference, appearances, and many other physical or mental factors. One of the main reasons that bullying and harassment is so prevalent among the teen- aged group is because it is so easy for that age group to succumb to competitions within the group as to whom is the coolest. Additionally, what comprises and qualifies as cool is predecided and made a
Many parents of the victims often have a hard time accepting the fact that their child is different and react in an unfavorable way. For example, in the book “Violence Against Queer People,” by Doug Meyer, who explains how most teens who come out to their parents are thrown out of the house. Being thrown out of their own home drives them to substituting school pastimes. “Drugs and prostitution replace school as a way of life. At the most critical time of their lives, their parents have denied them the support they need to become productive adults.”

Students who fall into the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, or questioning identity groups report being five times as more likely to miss school because they feel unsafe after being bullied because of their sexual orientation. This article is all about the change in families occurring over time since this 1950’s. This topic has evoked many discussions around the world about the type of families that need to be acknowledged and supported socially. The article examines the changes which have occurred over the years regarding marriages, families, gender relations, sex/gender division of labour and the life cycle that has changed noticeably. This article is useful for my research because it identifies the diversity in families which is accepted in our generation today which would be looked down upon in past generations. The idea of “traditional families” has been neglected and is not practiced by modern thinkers.

Homosexuality was once considered sacred in ancient Rome, albeit being treated poorly since the middle ages. Like this, homosexuality has been suppressed for a long time and thenceforth, the public opinion towards it has been on a downward road until recent years when LGBT groups started stepping up front and coming out along with the increasing controversy towards their rights. The subject of homosexuality has always been polemical. Every once in a while a news article would come up saying something like "Manny Pacquiao provokes storm by calling gay people ‘worse than animals’" or "Sam Smith Talks Coming Out As Gay".
Bullying is defined as repeated oppression, physical or psychological of a less powerful individual by a more powerful individual, people or group. It consists of three main types of abuse which are physical, verbal and emotional. Bullying in schools is a common and worldwide spread problem that can have critical and negative implications on the general school climate as well as on the right of students to study in a safe and secure environment without fear. Many people believe that bullying is part of life, happens in all schools and so it’s not an issue to worry about and that it lets individuals know what life is all about as it toughens them but in reality bullying is a detrimental problem that affects most school going children and teenagers physically, emotionally and socially.
