All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy, takes place during the late 1940s. It is a story about a young man named John Grady Cole, a sixteen year old who is the last of a generation of the West Texas ranchers in his family. John Grady Cole takes a journey across the border to Mexico, after his grandfather's death, to retain his dream of living the cowboy life that he grew up with.As the story unfolds, John Gady Cole encounters a variety of obstacles that determines if his dreams are meant to be or if his fate will overpower his desires. McCarthy incorporates a variety of literary devices, internal conflict, and tone to achieve his theme of romanticism and reality.

All the Pretty Horses, by Cormac McCarthy, is set in Texas right outside of the Mexico border. The book opens with John Grady, a sixteen year old boy, attending his grandfather’s funeral. John Grady has grown up on his grandfather’s ranch, and now that he has died the mother is going to sell the unprofitable ranch. John’s parents are separated at this time, his mother longs for a better life off of the ranch while his father is a professional gambler. His father seems to have lung cancer, but this is not directly stated. After the funeral John goes to meet his father at a café. They are both speechless, and the father feels that he has failed him.

Quarter horses got their name for being able to sprint fast in a quarter mile. They also are known for their powerful hindquarters. They originated in the United States. The American Quarter Horse Association was found in 1940. Its sturdiness makes it known for a great work or cattle horse. Quarter horses are the most popular breed in the United States. There is an American Quarter Horse Association, which has all the registered quarter horses listed. Quarter horses come in almost every color, the most common being sorrel. Most quarter horses stand around 15 hh. They are very calm horses and are easy to get along with. This is why they are very easy to train. They are used for all areas of riding, gaming, and any ranch work at all, especially cow work.

The book Indian Horse by Richard Wagamese, tells the tale of a young boy named Saul Indian Horse who goes through the struggles of trying to fit in, in a society controlled by white people. Saul tells the story of his life and the challenges he goes through. The change and abuse he receives, and the supports he rarely gets, Saul really showed how he was treated and what it was like to be a First Nations in the 1960s. Just like the book, the movie 42 by Brian Helgeland showed struggles of trying to fit in, in a society controlled by white people. The main character, Jackie Robinson, also showed the changes and abuse he received throughout the movie. He showed how black people were not seen as equals and how people reacted to a black person being in a white person’s territory. Both sources showed the challenge of being different. The challenge of what it’s like to live as a minority. How people can be cruel and condescending just by a person’s race and change is not easy to accept and achieve.

Rodeo is one of the oldest sports to exist in the United States; with the first rodeo being held in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1872. Baseball is the only sport older than it. Today, many people and organizations are trying to shut down rodeo because they claim it is cruel to animals. The sport of rodeo is not cruel to animals through the care and treatment of the livestock and performance horses.

Starting horses under saddle have been a question many people and trainers have asked for years. There are many benefits to starting a horse before the age of three, but greater drawbacks as well. A horse at the age of three is not skeletally mature enough to carry the weight of a human without major side effects. The growth plates in the vertebrae and in the knees of horses have not yet completely fused (Franz, et al 1). Starting a horse after the age of three decreases the risk of bowed tendons, sprained spines, and the deformation of the carpal bones in the knee.

Horse racing is a highly controversial topic in the equestrian world. Many people find horse racing as a great form of entertainment, while others see it as borderline abusive to the horse. Personally, I agree with the latter statement.

“The Rocking-Horse Winner” arises in England in the 1920s. In the beginning of the story, we are brought into a woman named Hester who lives with her spouse, and her children in a lovely neighborhood. She is very bothered with motherhood and holds that she needs more money to keep up their luxurious lifestyle. The children feel their mother 's eager for more money as well. They can all hear the house whispering; “there must be more money!” But no one addressed the elephant in the room, no one actually said it out loud, that there has to be more money. One day, Paul, asks his mother why they don 't own a car like their uncle Oscar. She expounds that his father is unlucky and is not able to make as much money as their uncle Oscar. Paul says that

Most of the injuries horses receive are from the whippings and being forced to run at outrageous speeds, which can result in multiple wounds.

The American Paint Horse is a specific breed of a horse valued for their daring markings, color, and figure. People have numerous ways of telling apart Paints from the other different types of horse breeds. One of the ways of knowing if the horse is a Paint is by looking at the markings. Some of the markings include Tobiano, Overo, Tovero, and Solid Paint Horses; each of the horses come innumerable amounts of color. The plow horse was a horse that had on horseshoes, a horse collar, and was selectively bred. The horseshoe let the horse work hard without the hooves cracking, while the horse collar acted as a barrier to make the horse pull the heavy load from their chest instead of straining their neck. The horses being selectively bred allowed the peasants to gain two more hours in the work day because the horses were stronger and faster. Overall, the innovations allowed the peasants to have an easier time going through the agriculture process.
