Industry profile
Throughout history, the place where the “sick” has been taken care of has transformed. Ancient Rome had special places where sick people could receive medical treatment-the world’s earliest hospitals. The environment where the healing takes place has ranged from the home to the churches, and then later it got more advanced to what we know now as the hospitals. Earlier the sick were treated at home; later religion came into the picture and started taking responsibility and started looking after the sick and the needy ones within their cathedrals and churches. The most powerful provider of healthcare was the Catholic Church. Their hospitals were located often around the edge of the villages or cities. Today hospitals have more responsibilities such as medical research, patient care and health education. General or specialist, majority of the hospitals today have wards for in-patients, clinics for out-patients, operation theatres for surgery and pharmacies for giving out drugs. Training the staff such as nurses and doctors, care for patients using complex equipment and devices, while non medical staff such as housekeeping, cooks, porters and engineers is also a part in making the hospital function.
