Beowulf is considered to be one of the strongest men alive. He
pulls off Grendel’s arm with his bare hands, and holds the giant sword that he finds in the
dragon’s lair in his bare hands.
Thinking of a hero, you often picture a brute of a young man with big muscles.
Generally, they are not thought of as being smart. One of the characteristics that Beowulf and
Odysseus have in common is their intelligence, as well as their courage, and physical strength.
Beowulf was intelligent because he knew that no weapons would hurt Grendel. He used this
knowledge to defeat and kill Grendel. The Cyclops was holding Odysseus and his men captive,
and Odysseus poked the Cyclops eye and covered his men and himself with sheep’s wool.
Odysseus seems to be the smarter of the two based on the number of times he was forced to use
brain over brawn.
Odysseus shows shades of gray. The line between good and evil is blurred. He makes a
lot of mistakes and is punished for them him. Odysseus’ main problem was the gods were mad
at him. The heroic qualities of Beowulf are easy to see and make him a great warrior and leader.
While Odysseus shows different heroic qualities. His battles are not ones he has searched

The poem makes constant references to God’s decrees in general terms; it never
discusses Jesus or specifics of Christianity. The hero, Beowulf, would have been considered a
Pagan, but it is suggested that Beowulf’s trust in God makes him look like a Christian. The only
Christian stories talk about the Old Testament story of Cain and Abel.
In Beowulf, many elements of Christianity are shown. Man survives only through the
protection of God. All earthly gifts flow from God, and man should be humble and unselfish.
Beowulf basically believes in all of these things, but acts a lot of the time in direct conflict with
these values. Pride without humility will result in a tragic fall. I think Beowulf believe in Gods

God’s grace and protection, but his need for honor and glory sometimes got the best of him.
Religion plays a large part in the Odyssey. The people looked to the gods for everything. It was
believed that the gods controlled everything and could destroy the life or afterlife if they did
anything wrong. The gods that were looked up to were Greek gods, not our God in Heaven. The
gods function more as spiritual guides and supporters for their human subjects. Their
No person is perfect, and challenging the ideas of who a hero is reveals the illusion of perfection. Humans make mistakes, and seeing Odysseus’ failures humanizes him and makes him more realistic. Odysseus has clearly made mistakes
Beowulf is a poem that based in the 10th and 11th century that revolved around the idea of good vs evil. The poem is named after Beowulf who is a supernatural hero that slays any evil that crosses his path but is a real sweetheart when it comes to other people or the king. Beowulf is to be considered an epic poem because the hero in the story creates acts of being courageous and even superhuman in some cases, reflecting timeless values such as courage and honor, and the poem reflects unforgettable values with honor and courage. Typically in an epic poem, one will see a character or “the hero” who has outstanding courage and commit superhuman deeds and show values to other people in that era. “Then he drew himself up beside his shield./The fabled warrior in his warshirt and helmet/trusted in his own strength entirely/
Odysseus possess all of these qualities, but what makes Odysseus worthy of this title is his traits of genuine concern and leadership in addition to these characteristics. What is dedication when someone lacks the ability to care for those around them while working towards their goal? What is intelligence if you lack to leadership to guide others towards something better? Odysseus had grown up a king for the entirety of his life and developed this expertise from a young age. Though this only is the result of his position as king because of most of his time had been dedicated towards leading and he has been taught to prioritize other’s over himself.
Not only have we seen brute strength, honorable courage, and admirable loyalty shine through beowulf, Beowulf also possess a great trait not many others have; his will to fight to the death, or self sacrifice. Not once throughout the story did Beowulf ever turn down a battle. Not once did he fear or flee his enemy. Not once did he ever give up even if death had him by the throat causing his mind to flood nothing but fearful thoughts and feelings throughout his body. Every battle Beowulf fought, he fought as if it was his last and that is what truly makes him the great warrior he is.
Odysseus proves his strength against the lotus eaters, and the cyclops. A Superhuman is braver, stronger, and cleverer than ordinary people. Beowulf was the only person who was willing to fight Grendel and was able to destroy him.
Beowulf possessed the poised demeanor necessary to defeat all evils by the arrogant swing of his sword. The commitment shown by lending his life to the welfare of his people was imperative in order to be called a flawless warrior. Beowulf embodied the determination that Anglo-Saxons saw as unmeasurably valuable. If nothing more than just fiction, Beowulf is the ideal hero of the people from who he originated. “They said that of all the kings upon the earth he was the man most gracious and fair-minded, kindest to his people and keenest to win fame.”
The Webster's definition of a hero is “A person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities”, this also happens to be one of the qualifications of being an epic hero. There are many things that can be used to compare and contrast Beowulf as an epic hero and a modern day hero, but you’ll find that the human idea of a hero was primarily the same in 700 CE as it is now although the job descriptions of hero’s have changed. In today’s time a person is usually considered a hero if they help the public good, like a police officer, soldier, firefighter and so on. In Beowulf’s time a person was considered a hero if they were a great warrior. When looking at the characteristics of what makes Beowulf an epic hero and the characteristics
In the epic Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf is depicted as a heroic figure who fights monsters and defends the weak. During its time, Beowulf would be considered a great hero, however in today 's standards Beowulf would only be considered a great warrior. That’s because a hero should value the lives of the people and not seek to be rewarded. Instead, Beowulf committed heroic acts for his own selfish reasons and never shows to values the lives of the people. From fighting Grendel to slaying the dragon, Beowulf only fought because he value the fame and fortune that comes along with those accomplishments.
The story of Beowulf isn’t just any ordinary story, but a story that has been told for centuries. A story of a hero who’s legacy has been told for so long. Beowulf’s life shows the characteristics of a true epic hero. He showed bravery, he used his strength against his enemies and in the end gave the ultimate sacrifice for his people.
I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me” (2511-2515). In conclusion, Beowulf is an epic hero. Although he made risky decisions, he did them for his people. He possessed the qualities of a hero; bravery, loyalty and fearlessness.
Christopher Reeves once said, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” Although Beowulf was human, he was not an ordinary individual, hero, or king, for he was a man who displayed superhuman qualities in his efforts to protect the Danish and Geatish people. Beowulf, who was established Geatish warrior that spent his life in battle, showed these extraordinary characteristics that made him an epic hero, one who possesses superhuman, almost god-like qualities. Being constantly on a quest, risking his life for glory and the greater good of society, and being superiorly intelligent, courageous and strong are the three most important reasons why Beowulf deserves such a notable
They both go through the “Hero’s Journey,” and display many characteristics of a hero. Beowulf, however, better fits the qualities of an epic hero due to his unselfish personality, his fearlessness, and his nobility. One reason Beowulf is the better epic hero is because his intentions and motives were selfless. He always fought to save the people, not for glory or treasures.

As literature evolved, and more legends and tales began to appear in different cultures, the idea of a traditional epic hero was established. Stories like "The Epic of Gilgamesh," and "The Odyssey," set the mold for this type of heroes, an influence that can clearly be seen when analyzing literature. In fact, most of these characters, regardless of the time and place they were created in, shared similar characteristics to the two kings.
Beowulf, the oldest surviving epic poem, has been recognized as one of the most important works of Old English literature. It deals with battles, warrior culture, and redemption in a Germanic society. Many writers have analyzed the relationship between Christianity and Paganism in Beowulf, and how these were a depiction of an early medieval Scandinavian society. J. R. R. Tolkien, renowned author of the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series, presented his view on the Pagan and Christian elements found in early medieval societies, as shown in the poem Beowulf. Tolkien explained that the poem shows “the nearness of a pagan time,” and with it “the shadow of its despair, as an intense emotion of regret” is conveyed throughout the poem (Tolkien).
