For many centuries, a religion and philosophy founded in India (c.525 B.C.) by Siddhartha Gautama flourished along the Silk Road as it impacted the way of living. The transformation of the religion, Buddhism, varied in different ideas and was heavily influenced by its teachings throughout Asia. After the collapse of the Han Dynasty, principles of the Buddha offered great comfort to China and changed the views of the world (Docs 1 & 5). In other areas such as Indonesia and Pakistan, architecture was also transformed into a form of Buddhism as other cultures were mixed into structures and items (Docs 2, 4 & 7). The “bell-shaped stupas” in Borobudur show how Buddhism was elaborated as it spread across Asian countries (Doc 2). The stupas create the shape of the Buddha as it is made for meditation and are distinctively found in Southeast Asia. Furthermore, this shows how art portrayed new developments of Buddha’s image, such as in the “Seated Buddha of Gandhara” in Pakistan (Doc 4). The statue represents the Eastern and Western culture as Greeks made the statues resemble Greek gods to portray the Buddha wearing a toga. This combines the culture of Hellenism and transforms Buddhism into a different image. The Lotus Sutra, “Lotus of the True Dharma” notes the empowerment and influence from the philosophies of Buddhism as it shows the way towards Nirvana (Doc 3). The purpose of the Sutra is to convey to people of the hardships of making it to “Tathagata”, which encourages them to work harder and mature mindfully. Furthermore, the practices of Buddhism is also shown in an edict of Ashoka, the emperor of the Maurya Dynasty (Doc 6). He was a strong supporter of Buddhism and based many propagandas from the religion. His form of the religion, however, is the practice of great education and a path to happiness. The “noble deeds of Dhamma” was his goal from Buddhism and believed that if his relatives were to base their lives from this belief, they would achieve peace in the next life. The Silk Road was a complex network of trading routes that spanned from eastern Europe to China, that allowed many goods to travel from city to city. During the Silk Road’s main prominence from around 200 B.C.E. to 1450 C.E., many changes took place - including ones that have drastically altered societies with change in both social hierarchies and major religions. However, even with the plethora of cultural changes that took place, a few aspects of the societies of the time stayed consistent, most noticeably the desire for luxury goods by the upper class. The Silk Road resulted in many changes to the social hierarchies of the time, especially in the treatment of women and merchants. In the second-wave civilizations prior to the road’s prominence, women and merchant were viewed as much lower members of society.

Siddhartha Gautama who is today known as Buddha has played an influential role in history and has impacted many worldviews significantly, one being Japan. This story originates in Nepal, when Queen Maha Maya gave birth to a beautiful boy Siddhartha. Siddhartha’s father King Suddhodana was the leader the Sakya clan, which predominantly speaking was a warrior clan, and was very noble with wealth and riches. Some say the queen gave birth to Siddhartha dreaming of a white elephant holding a lotus with its tusk. Anyways, after his birth, the entire city and domain had a grand party.
Although Hinduism and Buddhism were both found in India, they both tore apart yet made India better in many different ways. They both have a very similar philosophy but also differ in many ways. Siddhartha (the founder of Buddhism) was a prince who grew up practicing Hinduism. Siddhartha wanted to end suffering. He found how to reach enlightenment and started to teach it.
“The man who formulated Buddhism was Siddhartha Gautama, who was born a Hindu about 560 B.C. (Ridenour, 2001). Investigating Buddhism and Siddhartha’s life cannot be without describing the four sights Siddhartha encountered and the religious journey of discovery it began. Beyond looking at the four sights, and why they stirred Siddhartha to seek religious answers, Siddhartha grew spiritually while contemplating his beliefs and the newly gained knowledge. One day in the camp of Samanas word of an enlightened one, a Buddha named spreads. Siddhartha and Govinda ask to see this man and are originally turned down but, Siddharth hypnotizes the Samana with his stare and the Samana changes his mind. When Govinda and Siddhartha reach Gotama they listen to one of his teachings.
