Colonization’s impact on Canada

In this essay I will be discussing and examining the colonization of Canada as a whole, furthermore looking in depth at the effects and impacts colonialism has had on their economic, political and social situation and how they stand today. When discussing colonialism, we refer “The political control of peoples and territories by foreign states, whether accompanied by significant permanent settlement … or not”. (Bernstein 2000: 242) When looking at the colonialization of Canada the first reported evidence or signs of colonialism was made by Europeans. The first contact that Europeans had with Canada was from a patent under King Henry VII of Britain by John Cabot in 1497 on what is believed to be the first landing site which was called Newfoundland. However, the other European power to settle in Canada was that of the French, and their explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534. He claimed a small settlement which is today known as Quebec.

After the British won the 7 years’ war in 1763 against the French, England to over that eastern territory, which is today know as Canada, that the French had control over for a short period of time. But the British never made the citizens of Newfoundland (Canada) speak English and force British customs upon them.
