Galileo Galilei
Galileo was the most influential figure in the Renaissance era. Galileo was a remarkable man who contributed greatly to our understanding of the heavens above. He is often referred to as the “Father of modern science” for his groundbreaking discoveries in the fields of astronomy and physics. Galileo’s brave rejection of traditional views about the universe, his experimental observations of the stars and planets, and his relentless questioning of accepted knowledge marked a turning point in science and philosophy. This essay will look at Galileo’s accomplishments and their impact on science, both during and after his lifetime and beyond.

According to Alexander Koyre in The Philosophical Review, Galileo was the first to recognize the importance of mathematics as a tool for understanding the natural world. He was one of the first to use mathematics to explain and predict physical phenomena, and he developed an accurate description of how objects move in two dimensions and how they are affected by acceleration. He also demonstrated the motion of the planets around the sun, and established the law of inertia, which states that a body in motion will remain in motion unless acted upon by an external force. Galileo, having conversed with Kepler, was inspired to develop his own theories of nature built on the heliocentric theory. Initiated by the astronomical discoveries of these two scientists, Galileo mapped the moons of Jupiter and identified sunspots. He used the orbit of Jupiter's moons around Jupiter to prove the orbital relationships of other celestial objects. As such, Galileo studied motions and developed formulas for inertia and parabolic trajectories. Galileo's discoveries were, to a great extent, a turning point in astronomy and science. His development with the telescope helped further the understanding of the universe, and his investigation of the laws of motion provided fundamental contributions to science. However, due to the power of the Catholic church, his impact on science did not happen immediately. Born in Pisa, Galileo was a true renaissance man, excelling at many different endeavours. He was an Italian philosopher, mathematician, physicist and astronomer, and is credited for laying the foundations of modern science.
Galileo’s main interest was the telescope, he slowly improved it and it’s what he spent most of his time on. His philosophy was that the earth was not indeed the center of the universe, but that it is the sun that is in the center. He also found that Jupiter had many moons and he named them all. Galileo believed that any physical objects, even the cosmos, heavens, and earth are all mathematically applicable, unlike Aristotle, who strictly did not believe in applied mathematics. Instead of using algebraic reasoning to derive his law of freefall, he used geometrical reasoning (P1 pg. 99). Something unique about Galileo’s mathematical reasoning fro freefall was that he demonstrated his findings experimentally, such as his inclined plane experiment. The only thing that could have made him not as credible was that he did not have an explanation as to why things happened in his experiments and findings. Not only was he steering physical science to a new direction, but he was also diminishing the line segregating astronomical and celestial phenomenon, forcing the traditional thought into reconsideration.

While Galileo was very influential, his research was limited by Europe's environment which prevented him from making possible discoveries and inventions. The Roman Catholic Church in 17th-century Europe prevented Galileo from reaching his full potential, ultimately causing us to be behind in astronomic knowledge in the present day than we should have been. Back in the 17th century, people were very religious based and used the church's ideas to sway their opinions and control their lives.

Galileo, a devoted christian, was one of the first to go against his religious leaders to pursue science and prove what was right. Because of Galileo christians can study science freely. The church now encourages science where as back in Galileo's time it was frowned upon. We can thank him that science has come all this way.

The Renaissance was a time period of rebirth in Europe. The Renaissance began in the 14th century and lasted to the 17th century. During this time there was many advances in art, literature and science. One well known scientist that lived during the Renaissance was Galileo Galilei. Galileo had a significant impact on science of the Renaissance because of his discoveries in the fields of astronomy and physics.
Sir Issac Newton and Galileo Galilei were two of the most leading scientist of 17th century. Unfortunately, the two were never able to work together as Issac Newton was born the same year Galileo died, 1642. One thing is for sure, between the two there was a storm of scientific revolution under way. I will begin with the earlier revelations of Galileo. Considered the father of modern science, Galileo made major contributions to the fields of physics, astronomy, cosmology, mathematics and philosophy.
