The 1920s was a time of economic prosperity, social change, and growth in materialism. Despite the range of changes occurring across the nation, one thing remained constant; the search for the American Dream. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jay Gatsby; an enigmatic man of wealth, grapples with his own pursuit of the American Dream and the lengths at which he must go to in attempt to attain it. Fitzgerald argues that the American Dream is often sought after obsessively through acquiring wealth, and perseverance, despite its unachievable nature.

An Analysis on the Materialized American Dream Today The Declaration of Independence states “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Soon after the Declaration of Independence was built, James Adams, a historian and a writer, derived this idea to the so-called the ‘American Dream’. The amelioration of a genuine need for security, a steady employment, and a solid living established the groundwork of the American Dream. However, as massive technological and industrial changes took place, the concept of an ideal living changed which furthermore made the American Dream inconsistent.

The Great Gatsby is a modernist and jazz Age novel written by F.Scott Fitzgerald between 1923-1924, it was first published in 1925. The protagonist is Nick Carraway, he tells us his experience moving to West Egg and meeting a mysterious man who makes the most popular and extravagant parties, Jay Gatsby. The American Dream started when poor immigrants came to America searching for opportunities. The American dream is the achievement of success through determination. It is often described as a very superficial and materialistic ideal.

Gatsby has endless wealth, power and influence but never uses material objects selfishly. Everything he owns exists only to attain his vision. Then, he assembled this reshaped culture through by the morality classical novel the Great Gatsby. The young man named Jay Gatsby born in the lowest status of society, unlikely accepted this cruel fate, he worked ceaselessly to be a part of the world power that one day can reach to the woman he loved who born in higher social class. Fitzgerald exploited the story comes with figurative language and characterization so he demonstrated to the audience the ultimate goal may affect when falling in love with someone from a different social class can be an obstacle to achieving the American Dream.

Many people recollect the excitement that took place as a young child simply waking on Christmas day. At its simplest level, hope and curiosity drive these children to such an excited state. This excitement never leaves an individual, it simply changes forms. F. Scott Fitzgerald exemplifies this virtue through his character Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby. Gatsby’s life shows how an individual’s hopes and dreams are far more important than the desired satisfaction from these dreams.

The Corruption of The American Dream in The Great Gatsby In the novel The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald illustrates society in the 1920’s and the desire for the people with in it to achieve the American Dream, which embodies the hope that one can achieve power, love and a higher economic/social status through one’s commitment and effort. The novel develops the story of a man named Jay Gatsby and his dream of marrying what he describes as his “golden girl”, also known as, Daisy Buchanan, his former lover. Fitzgerald explores the corruption of the American dream through the Characters; Myrtle, Gatsby and Daisy.

We all like to believe that hard work and persistence pays off. The Great Gatsby is a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald that includes many themes such as wealth, love, dissatisfaction, and most importantly, the American dream, and how it’s really only a dream. The characters, especially Gatsby, are trying to achieve this dream of a perfect life throughout the entire book. It becomes apparent that instead of reaching the success they desire from the hard work that they put in, they destroy their entire lives and relationships with one another in the process. Unfortunately, this story is not too far off from something that could happen today.

The American Dream The American dream can be interpreted in multiple ways. I believe that the American Dream can be viewed as the belief that anyone, through hard work and dedication, could achieve their goal of wealth and happiness. Everyone chases the American dream as it catches everybody 's eye, but very few can actually achieve it. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, several characters are trying to reach the so called American dream.
