Born in the South, Fought for the North
Imagine leaving everything. Everything you were used to. Everything that you grew up in. Everything your parents believed in. To fight for the other side.
George H. Thomas was born on July 31, 1816 on a Virginia plantation just north of the North Carolina border. His family included his parents Elizabeth and John Thomas and his six siblings. Thomas' family owned 685 acres and 24 slaves. As a boy he gave his slaves on his family's farm Bible, farm, and reading lessons which was violating a Virginia law. His views were very different from his parents even at a young age.
When George was 13 years old his father died from a terrible accident leaving his family to have many financial issues. Clearly, A widow trying to raise six kids on her own was very difficult. During this time, the slave rebellion of 1831 was going on where rebel slaves led by Nat Turner were killing anywhere from 55 to 65 people. This caused his family to flee to hide in the woods for safety. Viewing all of the violence that the slaves were creating, George's views on slavery changed entirely. In his opinion, the slaves did have a good reason to be stirring up all of the violence.

General Ulysses S. Grant had a great impact on the United States both in his time as a war general and in his time as president. His role in the Civil War was instrumental to the Union victory and the strategies he employed saved many union troops and ended the war quickly. He had many wins, but also many losses and setbacks that were devastating. He learned and adapted through those setbacks and won the war and the American public. The United States would have had a much harder time winning the war and with recovery efforts afterward were it not for General Grant.
Jefferson Davis altered when he became the President of the Confederate States of America because he was the one who led the rebellion to a very brutal war in American history. He also was the one who started the war because he could have ordered the confederate troops to not fire on Fort Sumter, but he lets the soldiers fire on it and is the cause of the war and leads to many American deaths. He could have saved a lot of American lives by making a treaty, but that obviously did not happen.

Before and after the Civil War, people loved and respected Robert E. Lee. Not because of the side he fought for, but because he was an honorable man with strong beliefs; as a general he was a fatherly leader his soldiers looked up to; and he was a very clever tactician. Although Lee fights for the Confederacy, many people greatly revered him, even to this day. Robert E. Lee showed how honorable he was when he chose to fight for his home state of Virginia over the United States. He joined the Confederacy because his “mother” state would be fighting with the Confederacy.
Nat Turner, an African-American slave, led a rebellion and murdered several white slaveholders. He believed that a rebellion was necessary and that a spirit gave him the task to lead it. Throughout Nat Turner’s interview, it can be understood that he was determined to stop slavery or at least fight it for it was his belief that he must do it. His commitment to rise against the institution of slavery indicates that he did not enjoy being a slave. In a slave’s point of view, slaveholders were not kind but definitely tyrannical and cruel.
Uncle Tom and George have a different fates , and Mrs. Stowe made a big contrast with the two different people . Uncle Tom is honest and honest , because of his faith , Christianity . Sally Hemings was a slave on the Monticello plantation in the late 18th century, and her experience helps us to understand that her gender aided the way she was treated versus if they went by the color of her skin (Dilkes Mullins). {Woman during this era were thought of as property, they were objectified, they were treated poorly and had no choice. Their husbands were liable for anything that they did} [Being a female during this era outweighed what one 's social status was. It did not matter what race you were, but if you were a woman, you were treated as such] (Dilkes Mullins). Ms. Hemings was a beautiful sixteen-year-old enslaved girl (Gordon-Reed, 102) who was more than just a slave on the Monticello plantation.
Throughout history, there have been a plethora of debatable individuals that have been studied profusely by historians. Each and every one has their own arguments for and against their beliefs, actions, and personal life. Possibly one of the most controversial figures of American history, Jefferson Davis had a tremendous impact on the United States of America and the short lived Confederate States of America before, during, and after the Civil War. Along with the majority of prominent dignitaries of the past, Jefferson Davis came from a relatively normal and conventional background.
Bernard Guillen History 20 Thomas Jefferson Racism Thomas Jefferson was President of United State, before the American Revolution he was governor of Virginia and run the office for years, he was vice president under John Adam. He spoke to the people of how he wanted to become President and how his experience can benefit America for a better future. Jefferson owns a lot of slaves after his father died, he inherited them, along with his other brothers. Slavery was always a concern to Jefferson throughout his life, he really didn’t know if he like slavery or not, as president he wanted to free the slave. However, he believes that black was inferior to white, also he had too many slaves that basically help with everything he had, with hard labor.
Reasons to secede Though there could be listed many reasons why the southern states chose to secede. As stated in the introduction of this paper, the primary one that many historians refer to is slavery. This paper will explain why slavery was such a big reason for the secession. In addition to that, it will examine two other reasons, namely, economy and the rights of states. Of course, these are linked to slavery, and all the reasons will be more of a continuation of each other, and are simply different aspects of the same answer.
As Commander in Chief, Abraham Lincoln made numerous decisions that impacted the outcome of the war. He used a broad interpretation of his Oath of Office to justify nearly any action he took. Many of these actions overstepped the bounds of the Constitution, but all were made with the greater good of the country in mind. Despite having the best intentions, Lincoln did make mistakes throughout his presidency, such as how he handled the military.
Although George can be seen as caring to others he may be seen as controlling over what Lennie says and does. In chapter four, George goes off with the other farmhands to have fun and relax while he leaves Lennie alone back at the ranch. When Lennie goes off to pet his pup that Slim, one of the other farmhands, gave him, he sees someone else in the barn so he goes over and starts to talk with the stable buck, Candy.. When George found out what Lennie was talking about with a black guy, he scowled at Lennie and scolded him. " George scowled. "I though I tol ' you not to tell nobody about that."
In “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass”, Douglass narrates in detail the oppressions he went through as a slave before winning his freedom. In the narrative, Douglass gives a picture about the humiliation, brutality, and pain that slaves go through. We can evidently see that Douglass does not want to describe only his life, but he uses his personal experiences and life story as a tool to rise against slavery. He uses his personal life story to argue against common myths that were used to justify the act of slavery. Douglass invalidated common justification for slavery like religion, economic argument and color with his life story through his experiences torture, separation, and illiteracy, and he urged for the end of slavery.

After 7 long years that i have been a soldier in war I can finally come home. I am almost here i can’t wait to see my girls again, My beautiful wife and my now 9 year old daughter. It has been so hard in the war especially without them, i’ve lost so many friends right next to me in battle. It was one of the many horrible things that i wish didn’t happen in war. I joined the war in the first place because of the stupid “join or die!” thing.
