How Did George Washington Influence American History

Commonly known as the first president of the United States of America and as the father of his country, George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia(Grimm). He came from a wealthy family, his father Augustine Washington owned land and slaves and was a rich farmer (Grimm). George Washington is one of the most crucial figures in American history. Washington is known for his great humility as a man in a position of great power. In 1752 before Washington became president he was appointed commander and served in the military without any previous military experience (Marshall). During conflicts between the French and the British over land disputes he was given the position of Major in the Virginia Militia(Grimm). Eventually he became Colonel and he allied him self with the British to attack the French who were occupying much land on the Ohio Valley (Grimm). Washington showed early signs of leadership and courageousness and that helped him climb the leadership ladder. By 1774 he was recognized as a key supporter for the colonies. This led to his election in to the first Continental Congress (Grimm). In only one year he was elected to be the commander of the army. He was responsible for leading the Continental Army against the British Army to begin the fight for independence (Marshall). Washington was one of the critical members who fought on the frontier to create independence from Great Britain. If it hadn't been for Washington's contribution to the creation of the United States it is possible to say that we might never have gained our independence from Britain and the United States would be as powerful as it is today.
