Gatsby Gala Helen Wills Moody was a famous tennis player known for winning a multitude of championships during the Roaring Twenties. She not only excelled on the courts but also in the classroom as well. Ms.Wills is famous for placing first in the 1924 Olympics playing singles tennis. On top of that independent victorious win, she added yet another gold medal by taking the doubles with her coach, Hazel Wightman. Some would say her accomplishment of winning two gold medals at the Olympics is the reason she was invited to Gatsby’s party, while others would say her consistency and persistence while achieving victories got her the invitation to attend Gatsby’s infamous party. She made a huge impact on women who played tennis, both during and after her era. She was a slight 5-foot-7.5-inch, 125 pounds, power hitter. (International Tennis Hall of Fame) She found herself constantly bored and unexcited, so she would often practice with men on the West Coast, which was unheard of at the time. However, Wills hit the ball deep and hard which was hard for even the professional men to return. Her backhand and forehand were indistinguishable and there were no weaknesses to exploit. She was a relentless court general, with a lethal game, employing a wicked slice serve to draw her opponents out wide and would follow with a finishing volley or a diabolical overhead smash. She had great court coverage and instincts, combining athletic ability with match toughness to demoralize her opponents. Helen Wills would not just beat, but crush her opponents; both physically and spiritually. She was an icon, an “It girl”, both on and off the court. This led to her being adorned with respect, not just medals. She paved the way for women to embrace their athletic abilities and to also remain smart in academics as well. Althea Gibson was a successful tennis player however it didn't just come out of nowhere however it took a lot of time to get into the eyes of the public. A lot like Althea, Barbara Jordan was a successful politician becoming one of the first African American woman to do lots of stuff for example giving the keynote address in the democratic national invention and was able to break many records it took many tries and a lot of work and constant determination to reach their goals and get to where they wanted to go. Walker African American tennis player Serena Williams once stated, “Everyone's dream can come true if you just stick to it and work hard.” In life, there are times where everyone struggles and fails, but the only thing to do is to stay on top and work through. Madam C.J. Walker was born on December 23, 1867, on a plantation in Delta, Louisiana. (Madame C. J. Although media reporters are harsh to Serena she still owns it as a tennis player; there has been accounts of Serena being called out of her name and being verbally abused and as a “strong black woman” she remained humble and kept her eyes on the prize. Williams have multiple grand slam titles, singles, and double titles also that no man or woman can take from her. It might come as a surprise to some that Black children are taught that they have to be twice as good in order to achieve their ambitions in a White world. Claudia describes that in her article when she says, "Only after they give 150 percent will white Americans recognize black excellence for what it is. " But for Serena she just wants to win, and that was her main focus.

Gatsby’s interest in Daisy led him to put on elaborate events in order to impress her. A friend of mine experienced someone trying to impress them but their actions failed. One-time last year a guy tried to ask my friend, Lilly out. This guy had gotten a beautiful sign made, bought flowers, candy, and food for Lilly. At one of Gatsby’s parties, Nick notices the way that the women there are acting. He notices that women are laying their heads upon men’s shoulders in a “puppyish, convivial way,” that they were “swooning backwards” into their arms. The men seem to be treating them more as pretty objects as the way Nick describes this, and in the way he continues, noticing that these dancers were “knowing that some one would arrest their falls,” using them as some sort of protection. It seems as if these characters are just placeholders, they have no personalities whatsoever rather than to be little decorations in the background of Gatsby’s party. Even major female characters seem to be treated as blank placeholders by the other main characters, evidenced by when Gatsby is recuperating from when Daisy hit Myrtle with his car.
The positives and negatives of the grandiosity in the 1920s is seen in Gatsby’s parties, and helps create a window to the
