Herbert Lee Essay The civil rights movement was about how African Americans slowly gained rights entitled to them. We know only people like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, etc. However, to fully understand the civil rights movement, we now also look at the hidden figures, which include Herbert Lee. Herbert Lee will be forever remembered as a man who progressed the voting rights movement. Herbert Lee was a voting rights activist and a dairy farmer born on January 1st, 1912 in Amite County located in Liberty, Mississippi. His parents, Albert Lee and Elvira Turner Lee were both farmers. Lee had such little education, he didn’t even know how to sign his name, until his wife, Prince Melson Lee of Helena, Louisiana, taught him. Lee and his wife had nine children, and he was one of the only black people with a vehicle. He used the truck to transport members of the Amite region of the NAACp, and the SNCC like E.W.Steptoe, the leader of the Amte region of hrt NAACP. This sadly cost his life. …show more content…

This causes to Moses to be the first black man in Amite County to testify against white authority, but doesn’t end well since most people soon want to kill him in the case. Many white sheriffs and people try to arrest, threaten, and beat Moses before and after the case since Amite County is the most klan ridden county in the state.
