Muckrakers are people or organizations that search for and expose real or alleged corruption, scandal, or the like, especially in politics. Theodore Roosevelt created the term Muckrakers. He coined the term in 1906 during a speech. He created it in reference to Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress” he related it to a character that needed to stop ‘mucking around.’ There have been many important Muckrakers, but one of the most famous Muckrakers was Jane Addams. Throughout her life time, Jane Addams helped change the Progressive Era for the better. Jane Adams committed her entire life to helping the poor. She did this, however, in a unique way. She created a program in order to help immigrate the poor into a regular American society. She also was an active advocate for women’s suffrage. Jane Addams fought against city bosses and challenged the idea of war. She worked hard to create equality for all as stated in the Declaration of Independence. She was the co-founder of the Hull House along with a woman named Ellen Gates Starr. The Hull House was a place where recently immigrated citizens went to learn how to function in American society. While immigrants were at the Hull House they were taught how to be able to cook and what their rights and responsibilities of citizenship in America were. They were also able to learn about hygiene. They were submerged in American culture until they were able to live on their own in America. The Hull House also provided education and care for children, this included both child care and kindergarten. The Hull House created the first playground in all of Chicago. Due to Jane Addams idea, she inspired over 400 other houses around the country. Without the creation of the Hull House many immigrants would not have been able to survive in
