In 2004 it was published by STACKPOLEBOOKS. This book is a collection of essays that describes eight Confederate generals. In this collection of essays the reader is presented with a new perspective concerning the decisions and lives of these eight Confederate generals. The date was June 28th, 1861. On this day, Jefferson Davis Tant was born to William and Mattie Tant in Paulding County, Georgia. Merely two months and sixteen days before his birth, the American Civil War had officially begun. This time of horrific tumult and immeasurable sorrow was the world into which the infant Tant was born. At the time of his birth, his father owned eleven farms and a magnificent two-story mansion in northern Georgia.
Benjamin O. Davis Sr. was a very important figure in United States history, and military history. Benjamin Davis Sr was the first African-American military general. Back during the Spanish American war he volunteered to fight, and he stayed in the military and worked his way up the ranks. During the time he served, African-American people did not get the respect they deserved, so that means he had to work twice as hard to make his way his way up. Davis was a very important figure to the military and the world; he showed people no matter what race you can accomplish anything with hard work.
Jefferson Davis altered when he became the President of the Confederate States of America because he was the one who led the rebellion to a very brutal war in American history. He also was the one who started the war because he could have ordered the confederate troops to not fire on Fort Sumter, but he lets the soldiers fire on it and is the cause of the war and leads to many American deaths. He could have saved a lot of American lives by making a treaty, but that obviously did not happen.
Grant’s overall goal in the campaign was to capture the Confederate capital, Richmond Virginia. Grant realized that maneuvering over occupied Confederate territory would result in catastrophic losses but it was a risk he was willing, and felt one he needed to take. Grant first encountered Lee in the battle of the wilderness. The terrain included steep hills and immensely thick brush. Chaos reigned supreme in the battle as 26,000 men died in the period of three days.
Vicksburg was a heavily fortified city, with well-entrenched Confederate troops and formidable defenses. The geography and terrain made it difficult for the Union to launch direct assaults, as the bluffs and river protected the city. On the other hand, the Confederate Army, led by Lieutenant General John C. Pemberton, had the advantage of fighting on familiar territory. Their defensive positions were strong, and they were highly motivated to protect the city and the vital Mississippi

On that day, he took control of the Union troops and developed a strategy to finally defeat the Confederates and save the Union. Grant’s strategy was to destroy the South’s resources and men, and their will to continue fighting. He was an experienced military leader, and was trusted by the public and his troops. Once Grant was promoted to Lieutenant General by Lincoln, the next steps were entirely up to Grant. Lincoln had great trust in Grant to achieve the Union’s goals.
Robert E. Lee’s (1807-1870) contribution to the United States as a war general and commander received positive connotations for his commitment, attitude and inspiration on the battlefield. However, it is debateable about his contributions because of Robert Lee’s association in the Civil War (1861-1865) to the Confederate Army that fought for the Southern States. Robert Lee lead many successful campaigns and battles including the following; helping defeat Mexican armies that lead to U.S land gains and westward expansion, battles against a more powerful army in the Civil War. Despite these achievements Lee’s loyalty for the Confederate Army that fought to uphold slavery undermines his success and is highly debateable about whether his contribution is justified or not. Robert Lee’s contributions to his nation begin before the Civil War in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848).
Individual state’s governors opposed him openly, as did a few of his generals including P.G.T Beauregard who “claimed” Davis held him back from attacking Washington D.C. (Crews, 2004). The Confederate Congress could not get along, and when Davis’ asked for a three year conscription law, the Congress was incredibly short-sighted and agreed to only one year of conscription for troops (Strode, 2015). This limited the amount of cohesion that the Confederate Army could create and experience that troops would receive. Jefferson’s own appointed vice president, Alexander Stephens, opposed everything Jefferson did and criticized him harshly (Crews, 2004). Two men who were supposed to work together in coordination ended up barely managing to withstand the others presence (Crews, 2004).
Lee was so fearless he determined to invade the North reiteratively. Robert E. Lee strategy was to drift the fighting away from Virginia and into the Union Territory. He wanted to move the fighting, because the Confederate were under siege in Virginia. Lee hoped to gain recognition from Britain and France for the Confederacy. Joesph Hooker,the Union commander, was exposed to the worst defeat of the Army of Potomac in the Battle of Chancellorsville.
Lincoln’s plan was to bring the nation together and stop the fighting. Along with Lincoln there were other great commanders by his side. General McDowell led the second battle of the Civil War making the North realize this wasn’t going to be an easy battle to win. General Grant led the Union to a victory and the capture of the first Confederate capital. General Sherman led the Union to another victory and ended the Confederacy control on the Mississippi Valley.
For one thing, Davis was a Mexican War hero.("Jefferson Davis") He became famous at the Battle of Buena Vista because he blocked an attack of Mexican swords.
