Ruth Kuakuv 5 grade Biography 3/21/18c John Adams John Adams was born on a farm on October 30,1735 in Braintree, Massachusetts to a poor family. His father, John Adams, was a farmer and a shoemaker. He was also a deacon, a lieutenant, and he helped run the the town’s business affairs. Just like his dad, John Adams wanted to be a farmer. Adam’s mother, Susanna Boylston Adams, came from a family of doctors and merchants. Adams had two younger brothers named Peter and Elihu. They wanted the US to help them defeat Great Britain. John Adams believed that the United States should stay out of European and other countries business, so he did not want to help. This made France mad, so they insulted America. This made many Americans very mad, and it also made the US build up their army just incase France might attack them .Many people wanted to go to war with France, but John Adams wanted to make peace. As president, Adams made one very horrible mistake. He signed a law called the “Alien and Sedition Act”. The “Alien” law gave the president the power to deport or kick out any person who was not born in the US if he thought that they were dangerous. The Sedition Act made it illegal to publish any lies or mean writing about the US government. This made people very mad because they thought it took away some of their freedom and gave the government more power. On May 28,1798, the U.S. navy captured French ships sailing along the US coast.
