Throughout Canada’s history and other parts of the world, many changes were occurring and still is until this day by important Prime Minister in the past 20th century as well as made what Canada for what it is as a nation. Each Great Prime Minister such as Lester B. Pearson, Pierre Elliot Trudeau, and William Lyon Mackenzie King from the Liberal Party had a crucial role in their ways of thinking, actions, and achieving their objectives towards Canada. As Prime Minister, Trudeau had to face the October Crisis when a group of separatists, le Front de la Libération de Québec (FLQ), abducted a British Diplomat named James Cross and Pierre Laporte who was the Quebec Minister at the time (Gale Canada in Context, 2017). He acted quickly so he referred to the War of Measures Act in which he used for the arrest of the FLQ. Sir Wilfred Laurier was appointed leader of the Liberal Party of Canada in 1887, he achieved his first mandate in 1896. In the fifteen years he served, he achieved a series of policy initiatives that were designed to strengthen and preserved the federation. These include; the management of French and English relations, the expansion of the federation, a third continental railway, and economic reforms. Conflict between French and English has at different times in Canadian history placed undue stress on the federation. The ‘Manitoba School Question’ was one such event (Verrette 2006).

When Pearson was Canada’s Minister of External Affairs in 1956 (in the midst of the Cold War), the Suez Crisis began to stir. During the crisis, Egyptian President Nasser seized a prosperous oil company in the Suez Canal owned by Britain and France. As a result, these two countries sided with Israel and planned a military offense against Egypt in order to retaliate for what Nasser had done. Luckily before these highly-destructive bombings began, Pearson had found a peaceful solution to the crisis.

The twentieth century brought great prosperity to Canada, the prime minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier during the start of the 20th century had great visions for the country. He wanted Canada to fill the century as the United States had in the nineteenth century. Laurier’s vision of the twentieth century was to have Canada be known for its equality on a global scale, he said, “Canada is free and freedom is its nationality” . He believes, “freedom of thought, freedom in religion, civil freedom and freedom of trade, the day will never come when this principle shall decline” . However, equality for all was not achieved in the 1900’s, Canada did not leave an imprint for the rest of the world.

Both Alexander Mackenzie and John A. Macdonald contributed greatly to making Canada what it is today. However, due to being on opposing political parties, they both came up with completely opposite policies. First of all, while Mackenzie was seeking free trade with the USA, Macdonald implemented the National Policy. In addition, both Mackenzie and Macdonald had different intentions towards the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) project. Macdonald wanted to complete the CPR project, however, Mackenzie gave it no thought and immediately cancelled it.

By playing a role in defeating the Nazis and becoming prime minister two times in his life, he was one of the best to do it. His life before the war and becoming prime minister mostly involved the government and politics. His time as prime minister and defeating the Nazis was in his youthful ages, and life after WWII wasn’t the greatest. Winston Churchill built Great Britain to the greatest it could be.
