To begin with, the 15th and 16th centuries mark the commencement of European colonization and the integration of American and European culture. Countless Europeans and American Indians were influenced by one another, throughout the Columbian Exchange. Granted, the Native Americans suffered immensely, but there are more importantly numerous significant advantages to be noticed because of European migration. The Columbian Exchange led to the introduction of various products and sources of food, the merging of different groups of people, and transformations in American government and economy. Without the combination of European and American Indian culture, life today would be incredibly less progressive and different.
1) Lewis and Clark established relationships with the Native Americans in the region which was the main goal of Thomas Jefferson. The information they learned from the Native Americans such as food and Navigation proved to be very helpful. 2) The expedition provided extensive facts on the Northwest’s natural resources. 3) Lewis and Clark were able to document over 170 plants and over 100 animal species.
American Creation: The Purchase, Joseph Ellis Thesis: The purchase of the Louisiana Territory from France by America opened a new chapter of American national security in History, and helped to fuel western expansion along with the growing influence of the United States worldwide. The Louisiana purchase also helped to demonstrate the extreme extent of the Executive branch’s power, and the many negative consequences it brought with executive mismanagement which included mismanagement of colonial settlement, Indian removal, and failure to abolish slavery. Reasons: The Louisiana Purchase opened a new chapter in American national security, by removing French and British imperial ambitions in the states.

Throughout the seventeenth century, conflict between Europeans and Native Americans was rampant and constant. As more and more Europeans migrated to America, violence became increasingly consistent. This seemingly institutionalized pattern of conflict begs a question: Was conflict between Europeans and Native Americans inevitable? Kevin Kenny and Cynthia J. Van Zandt take opposing sides on the issue. Kevin Kenny asserts that William Penn’s vision for cordial relations with local Native Americans was destined for failure due to European colonists’ demands for privately owned land.
The purpose of this paper is to examine a few examples of the many challenges, conflicts and resolutions of the Lewis and Clark Expedition revealing America. These historical figures lead the first American expedition to cross what is known now as the western portion of the United States, departing in May 1804, from near St. Louis making their way westward through the continental divide to the Pacific coast. Even before the expedition began, internal diplomatic struggles occurred within congress where then, President Jefferson secretly obtained funding of $2500 for the expedition to explore territory all the way to the Pacific Ocean. At the time, the territory of the West did not belong to the United States. The resolution was
In Corps of Discover, 2016, “Although it was not successful, “Lewis and Clark achieved an impressive record of peaceful cooperation with the Indians and generated American interest in the fur trade” (Corps of Discover, 2016). When the Europeans began colonizing the New World, they had a problematic relationship with the Native Americans. The Europeans sought to control a land that the Natives inhabited all their lives. They came and decided to take whatever they wanted regardless of how it affected the Native Americans. They legislated several laws, such as the Indian Removal Act, to establish their authority. The Indian Removal Act had a negative impact on the Native Americans because they were driven away from their ancestral homes, forced to adopt a different lifestyle, and their journey westwards caused the deaths of many Native Americans.
After watching Tecumseh’s Vision, I became more knowledgeable about the struggles Natives had to experience as western civilization occurred. Tecumseh was a trailblazer to his people and was a visionary. He was in favor of a strong Indian confederacy and was a strong Indian leader. As a result of rising tensions between the Shawnees and the Americans, it lead to a costly culmination of battles in order to claim Ohio land and westward expansion. Tecumseh’s legacy lives on and he is remembered for his leadership and courage to take on the Americans.
What also triggered war was weakening relations with the Indians in the West. While the government tried to remove them from their lands to make room for settlers, they tried to civilize the Indians the best they could. The Indians that were acquired through the Louisiana Purchase were now significantly outnumbered by white settlers, and some tribes began to take on white ways of life, such as slavery and agriculture. Other Indians, called nativists, wanted to completely exterminate European influences and defy the settlement of their lands. The vote to declare war on Britain in 1812 reflected a divided nation between North and South.
