Not a lot of people knew the real Marilyn Monroe, in fact, her real name was not Marilyn. Instead her name was Norma Jean Baker, her mother named her after the movie star Norma Talmadge. To become a movie star herself she changed almost everything about her natural appearance. She dyed her naturally red hair blonde and had cosmetic surgery on her chin and nose. This was pre-silicon days so her implant was made out of cow cartilage. Marilyn Monroe was important enough to significantly impact American culture because of her role in the Korean war,her sexual identity, and how she tried to overcome stereotypes.
In 1954 Marilyn Monroe went to Korea to preform for and entertain the men that were stationed at the Korean War sites. Marilyn Monroe had been hitting the big screens and becoming more and more famous. During this time she also married the famous baseball player, Joe DiMaggio. While on her honeymoon in Tokyo Japan, she was spontaneously approached by the United Service Nations (USO) asking her to come perform for the american troops. Monroe was the "It Girl” of her time. Being known for being a dumb blonde and America’s number one pin up girl, but people often underestimated her. Monroe was exceptionally intelligent she was a published poet and had a personal library of around four hundred books. "Diamonds weren't her best friend. Marilyn Monroe collected books, and considered them her prized possessions." (Bagai) Monroe owned her own production company, being the second woman of her time to achieve this accomplishment.
