How Did Michelangelo Influence Western Art

There are many differences that can be pointed out when evaluating the Maesta and the Sistine Ceiling. One of the main differences between these two paintings is that the Maesta establishes union through their religion that depicts the Virgin Mary as the central figure of their belief system, whereas the Sistine ceiling is a painting that is devoted to the catholic church with god as their drive in their religion. This difference is important because it shows how important religion was to both the Romans and Sienese. Both of these paintings depict a contrasting view on who they worshipped. He was hesitant when asked to decorate the Sistine Chapel by Julius without any experience. What astounds me is he was able to paint the Sistine Chapel’s ceiling at that time, as there was no advanced technology to help him.

Art from the Renaissance period emphasized values from the Greek and roman cultures with creating the nude as an ideal figure, in order to somewhat capture the natural representation some ideals from classical Greek based on balance and proportion. Michelangelo had a gigantic influence on the renaissance. He was a master at both painting and sculpting, he also was an architect, engineer, and poet. During his day he was unbeatable in his painting and sculpting skills. He had many artist study under him and help him with painting the Sistine Chapel in Vatican, but none were on par with him.

Michelangelo once said, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free”. If Michelangelo actually did this with every sculptor could modern artist be doing the same thing to follow in his footsteps. Michelangelo’s artwork affects modern society by influencing many modern-day artists to become sculptors, painters and more. He also influenced types of art such as frescoes and ceiling paintings. To add to this his sculptures are discussed in today’s conversations. Finally, Michelangelo has introduced many different techniques that are still used in today’s society. Michelangelo’s artwork affects the modern-day society by playing a role in modern day art, daily life and even fashion.

In the art world, Michelangelo is viewed as an archetype Renaissance character due to the extraordinary order and flexibility he displayed in his works. During the Renaissance, there was a lot of artworks and creations. The art varied from paintings to sculptures. some of the famous artists during this time were Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello. These artists have created amazing works and have more than likely inspired many artists around the world today. These artists have created a huge impact on the importance of art along with giving more of a historic background. Each artist paints and or sculpts pieces that show human emotions, religious symbolism, and extreme detail.

The Renaissance movement was the bridge because it was the beginning of individual thought, and appreciation of literature and the arts. People began to think for themselves, people started to come up with many great ideas, rebirth, and cultural expansion. In this time period with your enemies your suppose to be tough and with others be cool, and everyone needed to be good at writing, latin and greek, poetry, speaking and history.
