Leading with Soul is both an inspiring book and a guide for becoming a better leader. The book alternates between telling the story of a leader who is striving to find meaning in his work, and regular interludes, which include summaries, reflective questions, and information regarding various spiritual philosophies. I was exposed to dimensions of leadership I had never previously considered. This paper will reflect upon how Leading with Soul helped me understand the spiritual nature of leadership, identify strategies for nurturing the spiritual side of my own leadership, expand my capacity for assisting others during challenging times, and increase my compassion while working with difficult others.
Many may believe that reading a book about religion would be challenging to accomplish for someone who is not religious. But those people have never read Anne Lamott’s, Traveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith. If one were to ask non-religious college students to read a book by a random author about spirituality and “Finding God” through conversion, they would most likely roll their eyes and bear through it. In Lamott’s series of essays, one does not have to “suffer through the readings” because her writing style is one of a kind. She has strategically chosen every word because she is aware of how important her spiritual experiences are to so many people, religious or not.

Although I don’t know many women over the age of 35, the pastor from my church back home, Pastor Wade, allowed me to have a video interview his wife. His wife, Nicole, was very accommodating and was very happy to answer questions about her faith. During the interview, she was able to tell me about how she became a Christian, how she feels about women in her faith, and I was able to reflect on what I learned from here. I have talked with Nicole before, but this will be the first time I will speak to her on a personal level. At age 41, Nicole grew up and lived in Hawaii for her whole life.
Every day people struggle with a part of themselves and their personal struggles become their own specific learning process, which is necessary so they become the kind of people that God already knows them to be. The reason for our struggle is due in part to doubt. We doubt who God knows us to already be. Much like Adam and Eve, who now had the new found knowledge of good and evil, had to leave the garden because it was necessary for them to understand that

Spiritual poverty as used here is the erosion of the graces and the benefits of a close bond with God that eventually leads to backsliding. Not all believers are spiritually rich and able to share some of that spiritual richness with other believers, or even enlighten those who are going contrary. Paul acknowledged this when he said, "Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted."
