Hip hop has had an immense effect on popular culture. Popular culture is defined as expressions of shared experiences that are much more fundamental to our society, including the values and beliefs that have shaped it, for example, integrity, community, compassion, courage, sacrifice, respect, hard work, and justice. Some would argue that pop culture, as of recently has been shaped by hip hop. Shawn Carter, popularly known as Jay-Z, is a hip hop icon who has transcended music itself through his private person and musical legacy. The fact that his wife is an ultra successful icon herself has added to the his image. He truly is a pop culture icon who has certainly influenced the lives of people. He has shown a uncanny dedication to his business and wealth. This has been an common factor throughout his entire career. In fact, his journey began selling CDs out of his car. He then would create Rocafella Records, which would go on to become one of the most iconic labels in the industry. Carter then founded the critically acclaimed Rocawear clothing line. He would then the sold ownership rights of the company for 204 million dollars. This however was not the end of Jay Z’s business career. He would go to create Roc Nation, which is an entertainment company,that features a record label, talent agency and touring and concert production company. This company works with some of the most dominant artist in the industry such as Future, Rihanna, J. Cole, Big Sean, and DJ Khaled. Not content with his success, Shawn Carter would purchase the music streaming app Tidal for 56.2 million dollars in 2014. Only three years later a 33 percent stake in Tidal would go on to be sold to Sprint for over 200. This means that Carter multiplied his initial investment by over 1000%.
