Did the Board of education violate Mrs. Pettit right to privacy in my opinion no? Mrs. Pettit and her husband were a member of a swinger's club which promoted diverse sexual activities, and unfortunately for Mrs. Pettit, an undercover officer from the Los Angeles Police department was investigating the Swinger's club. Although this was a private party, the officer observed Mrs. Pettit engaging in three separate acts of oral copulation with three different men. Mrs. Pettit arrested due to violating Penal Code section 288a (oral copulation), which is illegal in California ( ). The teacher looked at as exemplars a person children are likely following Mrs. Pettit indiscreet unlawful act is why the school board deems her unfit to teach at a public school. I do agree with them to a certain extent. To continue teaching at the elementary school could be a risk factor. The advanced technology and the internet student can access information about Mrs. Pettit criminal case detailing her misconduct because now it's public record of her committing a crime. Teachers looked at as role models and why I feel Mrs. Pettit should not be allowed to teach at her current school. When I analyzed the issue it was right to suspend her teaching credentials, but for a short period and a few ethics classes. When a person's decided to be a teacher it's mostly because of a teacher they once knew that influence them in some way or another, whether they became a Doctor, Lawyer or even a farmer, their teacher, influence most likely made an impact. A teacher profession comes with a lot of responsibility and accountability so what a teacher does outside of work indeed matter, especially when it's an elementary or middle school teacher. Children are so impressionable and are shaped and molded by what they observe and hear from those they look to as role models.
