Most people recognize the influence of the Catholic Church in music, art, and architecture. The purpose of this research paper is to demonstrate that the Church’s influence on Western Civilization goes beyond these areas. With the exception of scholars of medieval Europe, most people believe that the thousand years prior to the Renaissance were a time of ignorance and intellectual control in which strong debate and intellectual exchange did not occur and strict conformity was imposed on whatever educated community might have existed. Students today can hardly be blamed for believing this after all it is only what they were taught in school and in American popular culture. No matter how hard you work and how much evidence you provide to the truth, just about everyone believes that the entire period was intellectually and culturally barren, that the Church contributed nothing to the West but subjugation. Many professional authors still give credit to this view. In a book I recently read Second Messiah the authors paint a picture of the Catholic Church and its influences on Western Civilization that couldn’t be more wrong. They state “The establishment of the Catholic Church era marked the beginning of the Dark Ages: the period of Western history when the lights went out on all learning and …show more content…
In addition the discovery of champagne can be traced to Dom Perignon of Saint Peter’s abby, Hautvilliers on the Marne. Dom Perignon was appointed cellarer of the abbey in 1688 and developed champagne through experimentation with blending wines. This fundamental principle he established continues to govern the manufacture of champagne today. Although this is not as glamourous as some of their intellectual contributions these tasks are nearly as important to building and preserving the civilization of the west during a time of turmoil and
While feudalism and the class system of the European middle ages seemed to guarantee that families would remain in their social strata for eternity, the philosophers of the Renaissance challenged that status quo. They suggested that people could—and should—question authority. For instance, in Erasmus of Rotterdam’s The Education of a Christian Prince, he urged people to, “judge all things on their own merits as ‘good’ or ‘bad.’” Like many of his time who considered themselves humanists, Erasmus believed the study of the liberal arts could help people dramatically change their lives.
Spanning from the 5th to the 15th century, this period saw the emergence of powerful feudal states, such as the Holy Roman Empire and the Byzantine Empire. Religion played a central role in medieval Europe, with Christianity being the dominant faith. The medieval age in Europe laid the foundation for the Renaissance and marked a pivotal era in the continent`s history, characterized by political disorder, intellectual advancements, and cultural transformations.
Charlemagne (Charles the Great) was the elder son of Pepin the Short and a grandson of Charles Martel. A strong leader, Charlemagne wanted to create a new Christian Roman Empire in Western Europe. He defeated the Lombards in to protect the pope. Charles invaded spain and attacked the muslums. He also attacked the Saxsons andand converted them to Christianity.
The Renaissance is widely viewed to be an era of different cultural changes that brought us widespread of new educational reforms. For the first time, education was considered to be an essential part of a society. To the popular thought of the Renaissance, the people who were educated in the Greek classics and with a standard knowledge of mathematics, philosophy ,and literature would be the ones who would bring the advances of human civilization. However, as the Renaissance went on, the popularity of education declined, and education once again became a luxury for only certain people. The renaissance education came from being a guide to the true meaning to a great luxury.(document 1).
The sixteenth century America is primarily dominated by the Puritan idealism, but slowly through the year’s things are changing both in the religion and culture. In human nature the constant need for change is captivating, a change towards something new and different than the current. The events of the growing and changing eighteenth century America reflect just that. Ideas of the Enlightenment take deep root in the transformation of ideas about human’s relationship to God and to nature. Therefore, a deeply religious society starts transforming into a more secular culture, but religion still has quite a large influence.
Miranda Thomas Art and Culture Survey 2 Professor Street June 18, 2023 Enlightenment Did you know that the Enlightenment period began an intellectual wave of new ideas and a critical way of thinking that changed the course of art history? During this historical period of time, science, intellectual exchanges, reasoning, and critical skills were promoted and established. When these new ways were promoted and established, religion, myths, and traditions were beginning to be questioned by individuals for their authenticity and their logical reasoning.
During the Medieval period, both society and the educational system centralized around religion, however, Christianity was clouded and political at times, plagued with bits of corruption. Furthermore, the common
Throughout history, there have been many significant events that have affected the world in different ways, one being the invention of Christianity. The role of Christianity has been complexly tangled with the history and formation of the western civilization. Christianity has affected the world in many ways, but most noticeably through politics by diminishing the power of Roman authority, society by affecting the way Roman citizens live, and religion by stopping the progression of Islam. First, the invention of Christianity had a huge effect on the politics of the western civilization.
The culture of ancient Greece left a lasting influence on the development of Western Civilization and can be attributed with the birth of western philosophy and the concepts of politics. It was also a culture that had an interest in understanding the world around it, creating the study of science, and considering the study of science as valuable as the study of religion. The fact that science is considered highly along with religion is rather interesting considering how religious organizations in later centuries would often seek to demean the results of scientific studies. This apparent coexistence between religion, science, and philosophy in Greek culture is due to how religion was handled in ancient Greece in relation to government and society. How did a mutual coexistence start?
The Catholic Reformation was a major event that took place during the development of the west. Some of what they did during this reformation was in response to what the Protestants had done during theirs and they also wanted to clarify the differences Protestants and Romans churches. They were persuading the Protestants to return back to the Roman churches and wanted them to have a stronger spiritual and religious relationship with their fellow people. The Council of Trent was a defining character during the Reformation. It was the gathering of officials in the church such as, bishops, cardinals, and other high church officials that would meet during between the years 1545 and 1563 to discuss their beliefs and the reform.
Natalie DiMichele In our society today, individual thought is highly valued and essential for progress in the world. However, there was a time when thinking outside of the box could’ve led to eternal damnation. During the Middle Ages, everyone’s understanding of the world and our place in it was taught to them by the Catholic Church. Very few people challenged the Catholic Church’s beliefs due to a lack of education and fear of the Church’s harsh punishments.
Christianity is arguably one of the the most influential and important aspects that originated in western civilization. The religion started out as a small sect of Judaism and a man named Jesus spreading his word with a few followers. For centuries, Christians in Rome endured persecution and secret worship. With the appeal of eternal salvation and the hierarchy of the church, Christianity gradually spread, began to rise, and eventually became the prominent religion in Rome. Today, Christianity is the most widely practiced religion in the world.
When the Protestant Reformation occurred, it had a large effect on western civilization. The Protestant Reformation was the 16th century when Martin Luther wanted to increase life and develop the right way within the churches. The Protestant Reformation changed life for people for Europe by the changes with religion, gender, and class. In Europe, there was a lot of religions fighting for the chances of succeeding and having all the power.
What should people believe? Should people follow the corrupted church? Where could people find a spiritual support for themselves? These questions all addressed the validity of Renaissance, in a deeper moral and philosophical perspective. It grants a way to people to discover the original meaning of the religion, the importance of salvation for
The work of education was neglected, and learning decayed. (Baugh 83). Because the clergymen were not moral, a decline in religion was seen, and due to this shift, a change needed to be made. Religious leaders of the day came together and created the Benedictine Rule and replaced secular clergy by “monks [who] pledged to the threefold vow of chastity, obedience and poverty (84). This tightening up of the religion is mirrored in the lives and actions of the Christian Franks who follow their leader Charlemagne who is seen as the “emperor of the entire Christian world” (Puchner 219).
