How Did The Colonists Live In Jamestown

As the colonists live in Jamestown, they question their survival. In 1607, they landed on Chesapeak Bay and built a colony called Jamestown. They had their hearts set on land and gold. But they didn’t get what they hoped for. The years they have lived in North America have not been easy. Hunger, lack of occupations, and Indian attacks got to be the main causes of the colonists’ deaths. This event changed history.
Colonists suffered starvation due to the environment and lack of skills. There were no famers on the ship list ( Smith). Without farmers, the colonist could not grow crops and so they starved. On the list, there were some men without known jobs. A few off the unknown men may have known a little about farming, but most likely not enough. Droughts were also a problem. From “The Lost Colony and Jamestown Droughts,” the charts show that the drought lasted from “1605-1612.” With a drought that long, crops didn’t grow and colonists died from hunger and thirst. Eventually, the colonists did get food when they traded with the Indians. But Francis West took all of it, and went back to England.
