The Louisiana purchase was a $15,000,000 purchase of land that got us about 15 states. Thomas Jefferson bought the land mass, all west of the Mississippi, from Napoleon Bonaparte in 1803. This Louisiana purchase got about 15 states including Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas, Iowa, and most of South Dakota, Louisiana, Wyoming, Montana, and part of Texas, North Dakota, Minnesota, Colorado, New Mexico, and Missouri. How does this connect to the Civil war? There are three different reasons it affects the Civil war and helped start it. Three different states bought during the Louisiana purchase seceded and fought for the Confederates, which meant they were a major part of the Civil war as it was part of the side that fought for slavery. The more affecting reason is the Kansas-Nebraska act they spawned. Both of these affected the Civil war. The war was mainly fought, at the beginning, was about the trade and what to do with the land. The Kansas-Nebraska was a major aspect to the start of the Civil war.The Republicans were against while the South was for it. Half the Democratic party believed in the Kansas-Nebraska act the other half did not. This meant one of the major parties were split into two. Each side elected their representative, this meant each of those representatives only got half the party. Unlike the Republican party which was strongly against the act and had everyone in the party voting for the same person, the Democratic party was falling apart. This meant Lincoln had more supporters on his side than the split Democratic party, which lead to popularity, the south didn’t like his views or popularity this made South Carolina start thinking about seceding.
