1. I think that Odysseus’ plan for escaping the Cyclops was very cunning and methodical. I think my absolute favorite part is when he told the Cyclops his name was Nohbdy because it was amazing trickery and it’s what helped the plan continue on.
2.
a. Euanthes’ son, Maron, had given Odysseus a goatskin full of sweet liquor when he was on Ismarus.
b. The encounter with Maron shows that the Greeks were very hospitable considering Maron was very kind in his actions and gave Odysseus wonderful gifts.
3.
a. Since for them it is custom to honor strangers and give gifts under the gods’ courtesy, they expected a warm welcome form the Cyclops.
b. Polyphemus claimed he wasn’t afraid of their Gods and due to this he was hostile towads his “guests” and ate two of Odysseus’ men on first encounter. He broke the “laws” of cordiality and was very unkind.

a. Ultimately, Odysseus and his men escape from the Cyclops laying him down drunk, and stabbing his single eye – blinding him. Due to this they were able to hide on the chests of the Cyclops’ large sheep and escape the cave when he let them out for grazing that day.
b. A positive trait he expresses is his cunning and quick-wit to come up with a detailed plan to escape the cave. He also, however, demonstrates a negative trait when he turns back to taunt that cyclops and boast about himself, which then lands a curse on him and his men.
Odysseus and his men are accustomed to being catered to when they visit a new land, so when they didn’t find their host, they ate the Cyclops’ cheese while he was away. Polyphemus didn’t take that well, and scoffs at the idea of piety and customs of the gods, “you must be a fool, stranger, or come from nowhere, / telling me to fear the gods and their wrath!” (9. 307-308). While the Cyclops race is bore of Poseidon, they do not want any association with the gods, and live in isolation on their island without any connection or interest in traditional customs. Instead of being hospitable, he takes some of Odysseus’ men and “knocked them dead like pups.”
Odysseus is a man of fine qualities and attributes, but he's also a man of flaws and imperfections. He is a hero and thats proven by the fact that he showed great amounts of intelligence and bravery when the ships were going awry and Odysseus was for only one to survive. But through all that he is also a fool, Odysseus makes a mistake telling the Cyclops his name after blinding him, which later gets him into trouble with the Cyclops father; Poseidon. Many events got Odysseus into trouble, but he somehow always found a loophole out of it.
He and his men wander inside disregarding the laws of Xenia as custom in the area. The Cyclops’ is a savage beast and proceeds to trap them within his cave and devour them. Odysseus uses his incredible guile and cleverness to outsmart the beast. He first gets the Cyclops’ extremely intoxicated with wine so that it passes out. He then gouges its’ single eye out so that it cannot see where he and his men are hiding.
Odysseus is the protagonist of The Odyssey. He is not a typical ‘strong man” like Achilles or Hercules, rather, he is a man of thought, patience, and clever tricks. Odysseus used his intelligence to overcome obstacles when he was on Calypso’s Island, at sea, and when he returned back home to Ithaca. First, Odysseus was on Cyclops when he had to overcome an inconvenience. To begin, Odysseus and his men followed a flock of sheep into a cave after finding them on the island of Cyclops.
Odysseus shows no hospitality towards the cyclops. He gets several of his men killed and shows no remorse. He even gets himself and his men cursed so it will be a long journey to return back home to Ithaca.
The first trait is that he is a very arrogant person and this often puts him and his men in danger. Secondly, Odysseus can be deceitful and not fully communicate the facts of each situation. Odysseus was a weak leader and his lack of vision in not seeing the strength and possibilities in his men combined with his inability to effectively communicate to those around him ultimately led to his failure of not being able to safely deliver his men back to Ithaca. The story of the Cyclops in Homer 's The Odyssey illustrated how Odysseus '
Throughout the story, Odysseus demonstrates his courage that ultimately allows him to survive. One of these moments was during his journey back to Ithaca, where he faces a race of man eating giants called the Cyclops. Odysseus originally stops his ship there to relish a feast while on his journey back to Ithaca, but while doing so, out of curiosity explores the island. Soon, he finds a deserted house and decides to wait of the owner. The owner was unknowingly one the Cyclops, named Polyphemus.
When Odysseus is leaving the cyclops cave, his egotistical behavior is shown when he tells Polyphemus who hurt him. Odysseus screams to Polyphemus, “if any man on the face of the earth should ask you who blinded you, shamed you so—say Odysseus, raider of cities, he
An epic hero is someone who is characterized commonly on their nobility and bravery. However ,there are more attributes epic heros can posses. For example Odysseus, the protagonist in Homer's retelling of “The Odyssey”, shows many forms of excessive arrogance and pomposity. After conquering Troy, Odysseus and his men set off on their way home.
He has to overcome his foes and his environment. In the cavern with the cyclops, Odysseus must fight to survive. He and his men have to use wit and strategy to escape the cave. After the first attack on his men Odysseus knew he would need to develop a plan to survive. Odysseus and his men are put in danger as they encounter their foe:“Neither reply nor pity came from him, but in one stride he clutched at my companions and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brains out, spattering the floor” (Homer 903).
In The Odyssey, the Cyclops is a monster because of his key differences from mere human beings, specifically his lack of wit and of morals. Depicting these qualities as monstrous support that cleverness and a general regard for human life were heavily valued in Greek culture. Odysseus easily trick the Cyclops bragging, “I poured him another fiery bowl - three bowls I brimmed and three he drank to the last drop, the fool”(9.404-406). To describe the bowls of wine as fiery foreshadows the demise of the Cyclops. Odysseus was able to use his brain, not strength, to make the Cyclops drink himself into a stupor.
3: Odysseus’ temptation to affront the cyclops, Polyphemus, leaves his crew bothered by his actions, because when Odysseus crewmates are watchful and wary of temptation, Odysseus falls into its trap time and time
Odysseus’s traits help him achieve his goal of returning to his home. Odysseus and his men have a lot of willpower to continue traveling after some dangerous and life risking experiences with cannibals, lotus-eaters, cyclops and many more creatures that could of killed Odysseus and his whole crew. Odysseus's confidence and epic hero traits only increase as the story goes on, his confidence in his men increase as he starts noticing how strong and powerful his men can be, and also shows confidence in
In the book The Odyssey, the main character, Odysseus, is a man who is loved and respected by many. In the beginning of the book, we learn that Odysseus has left on a journey and, since it has been many years since his departure, many people assume that he has passed. On his journey, he portrays his many traits, not all of them being good ones either. Some of his good traits include his cunning, bravery, and hard work ethic. On the other hand, his negative traits are his excessive pride, immense curiosity, and rather large temper.
He could have left and kept going straight for home but he instead went back to save them, this leading into another quality of Odysseus. Bravery. Throughout his venture he has stayed courageous, getting past the Cyclopes, Circe, and sirens. Now, he does have a multitude of great qualities but, despite all of the good that he has done, Odysseus still has flaws.
