Spartacus once said , “ When a slave dies he loses his pain. Death is the only freedom a slave knows. That’s why he is not afraid of it.” Sparta was an egalitarian society based on the principles of equality and freedom. So this question arises , is it possible that the Spartan Revolution began a ripple effect in the ideas of slavery , government ,and class distinctions which eventually impacted the Haitian Revolution?The Spartan and Haitian Revolutions are similar in that they both began with slave revolts,and choose their governments,after their revolutions, however they differ on how they impacted class distinctions.

All though Haiti was ruled by a dictatorship the people not only asked when declaring freedom for this, but acted on this want, further showing the gain of liberty and equality of people in the government . This might sound strange to want a dictatorship, but the people of this nation truly believed this was the only type of government that could be successful which was literally written in their declaration of freedom in the Jamaican letters ( Simon Bolivar 9 ) . Sharp class divisions were not dismissed, just tightened due to the creoles conservative views which were reflected on their ideas of class( Bromley 1 ).The class distinction also tightened due to the fact that the population was nearly bankrupt from war and debts they owed the French for their declaration of freedom (Saylor 4-5). That is not the only reason that class distinctions tightened ,another factor was that the Creoles were in charge of the government. This caused the class distinctions between the races to deepen because of the government’s conservative view and influence by the Creole peoples. The government itself was also a large class distinction, because it is a dictatorship.
