In A Single Shard, each character has traits that changed from the beginning to the end. Tree-ear is an orphaned boy who lives in a small village on the West Coast of Korea and had a care-taker, Crane-man, that passed away. Tree-ear’s traits and personality changed throughout the book. Tree-ear’s features changed gradually from the beginning to the end.
In the beginning of the novel, Tree-ear was very independent. On page ten of A Single Shard it states, “Afterward, Tree-ear washed in the river and fetched a gourd of water for Crane-man, who never went into the river if he could help it; he hated getting his feet wet. Then Tree-ear set about tidying up the area under the bridge.” Crane-man was unable to do many things. According to page seven “The shriveled and twisted calf and feet he had been born with made sure of that.” Tree-ear had to do the things Crane-man could not, so Tree-ear learned how to be independent and do things on his own even though Crane-man raised him.

Tree-ear worked for Min, a famous potter, to repay him. In return, Ajima fed him and Crane-man. Tree-ear and Crane-man stopped gleaning the fields therefore they started to depend on Ajima for food. Truly a felicitous combination.” Tree-ear worked for Min, but he did not have to search for food like he used too. “As usual, he had eaten half of his meal at midday. On retrieving the bowl after the day’s work, he unwrapped he cloth as he always did, to check on the bowl’s contents. The bowl was full again. Tree-ear stared in surprise. And every evening thereafter he returned to find the bowl full, with enough supper for both Crane-man and himself.” According to the bottom of page

Melinda is going through the same procedure as the tree. If Melinda put her past behind her and move on, it will give her a chance to grow. "Let me tell you about it." This quote made me happy because it was coming from a girl who stayed to herself, who wouldn't tell anybody anything, even though she had experienced something tragic. Deep down inside, her not to say nothing was hurting her even
Many cultures have different beliefs on how earth came to be. Native Americans shaped people 's society. They give individuals multiple views of how cultures have changed lives. The tribes Huron, Nez Perce, and Medoc share stories of their cultural beliefs. In “The Sky Tree”, “Coyote finished his Work” and “Blackfeet Genesis” all portrayed natural beliefs, complex religious beliefs and social values.
" I could not believe this strange story, and yet I could not disbelieve Samuel. " Is the golden carp still here?'' "Yes," Samuel answered. His voice was strong with faith. It made me shiver, not because it was cold, but because the roots of everything I had ever believed in seemed shaken.

In life, people can endure adversities through the aid of the people around them. Wiesel and Houston both reveal this truth among their own passages. In Night, a teen, named Elie, is in a concentration camp and is helped by other characters to surpass the difficulties he faces. Similarly, in Farewell to Manzanar, a Japanese mother and her family are forced to go to an internment camp, where many people help her defeat her challenges. Both Elie and the mother help to prove a common theme between the two passages.
The tree is like a boat and the main mast is the biggest part, and also the most helpful. The main mast holds the biggest sail and pushes the boat the furthest. This theme can be described also in life, sometimes there is a stranger, someone unknown who is like a main mast helping you travel the sea of life. Jewett has used similes and imagery to show how the tree and the environment can be an adversary at once and then immediately become a helping

The process of gaining independence is an important part of who a person is and how they overcome issues they come across in their lifetimes. Several characters from the book, The Bean Trees, are either independent from the beginning of the story or develop to become independent. Due to these characters strong, self-supporting personalities, they can solve the issues they come across in a self-sufficient manner without help from others. These characters are never stuck relying on others for help or forced to wait for others. In the book The Bean Trees, several characters personify independence throughout the work, which supports the idea independent people can self-sufficiently overcome obstacles they come across.
Identity goes hand in hand with self-growth and self-reflection. In the journey of maturity, there is a consistency of both emotional and physical growth. As a person ages, they are slowly moulded into the person they were always meant to be. Often how a person is raised and the events they experience ties in with the timespan it takes for them to reach that point of self-growth. In the story Shaving written by Leslie Norris, Barry is a seventeen year old boy struggling with the inevitability of his father dying.

He found the dead man seated like the tree. Crane describes how the dead man’s body was dressed in a blue uniform that had since faded to a shade of green. His eyes had also changed to the dull hue like that seen on the side of a dead fish. His mouth was open with red having changed to an appalling yellow. His face was gray with ants running over it, with one trundling a bundle of some sort along the upper lip.
The discussion on the social justice and injustice is one of the most important issues in cotemporary global scenario. New Oxford American Dictionary defines Social Justice as “justice in terms of the distribution of wealth, opportunities, and privileges within a society”2 (Wikipedia). Contrary to it where inequalities persist in the society it falls within the sweep of injustice.
