Ulysses Simpson Grant is one of the most interesting people in history. If you didn't know already, Ulysses birth name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. He was born on April 27, 1822 at Point Pleasant, Ohio. He was the first son of Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson Grant. Instead of taking after his father, he told after his mother because he hated the idea of working in his father's tannery business. His name was changed when his father wanted him to join the United States Military Academy, but a error had listed him as Ulysses S. Grant and he didn't want to get rejected so he changed his name. Ulysses S. Grant served as a general and commander for the Union armies during the Civil War. Grant married Julia Dent. He died on July 23, 1885 at Mount McGregor, New York. …show more content…

Ulysses S. Grant was a great and one of the best general and commanders during the Civil War. After the war, Grant was promoted to full general and oversaw the military during Reconstruction. Without Grant's bravery during the war, the United States would still be separated into two different countries. By the time the war ended, Ulysses S. Grant became the 18th president of the United States in 1868. Before he was president, he was helping President Andrew Johnson with his fight against the Radical Republicans. When Grant entered the White House as president, he was politically inexperienced. Also, an interesting fact about Grant is that he was the youngest president during that time at the age of 46.
