How Vincent van Gogh’s artwork impacted mental health today
What do people think about when thinking about the famous artist Vincent van Gogh? Most people will typically think of his beautiful artwork, but what made his artwork so beautiful and impactful? Up until today’s point in time, many people didn’t acknowledge Van Gogh’s awful mental health. There is a great deal of evidence that Van Gogh suffered from multiple mental health issues as well as an Alcohol Use Disorder. Since mental health wasn’t talked about as much as it is today, Van Gogh was left feeling confused about everything that he was feeling, even writing in one of his notes “mental or nervous fever or madness, I do not know quite what to say or how to name it” (International

Art therapy is when someone puts their feelings that they cannot explain in words into art instead. Vincent van Gogh has helped many people today because he unknowingly used and heavily influenced a widely used coping mechanism for mental health called art therapy, which helped have a positive impact on people’s mental health today. Before going into exactly how Van Gogh used art therapy as a coping mechanism and helped influence it, it’s very important to talk about what art therapy really is, as well as how it has helped millions of people around the world. Art therapy as defined by the American Art Therapy Association as “...an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.” For many people it’s very hard to …show more content…
Although he was never officially diagnosed, many professionals think that he probably had Bipolar I Disorder, which is defined by Mayo Clinic as a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). He also had an Alcohol use disorder, “...a medical condition characterized by an impaired ability to stop or control alcohol use despite adverse social, occupational, or health consequences.” (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism). On top of that there is also evidence pointing towards the idea that Van Gogh had Borderline Personality Disorder, “...a mental health disorder that impacts the way you think and feel about yourself and others, causing problems functioning in everyday life. It includes self-image issues, difficulty managing emotions and behavior, and a pattern of unstable relationships.” (Mayo Clinic). It was hard for him to put into words and describe to others everything that he was feeling, especially in the 1800’s when he would’ve sounded like a crazy person and been sent to a mental institute, so instead of explaining what he felt in words he explained how he felt through art. Many people can look at Vincent van Gogh’s artwork today and tell what he was feeling. Nearly all of his pieces of art can be used as examples of him using art therapy. In the biography Van Gogh: A life written by Gregory White Smith and
Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter known for his expressive use of color and emotionally charged subject matter. Van Gogh's worldview was shaped by his experiences and struggles throughout his life, including his mental health issues, poverty, and personal relationships. Through his work, he sought to express his emotions and capture the beauty he saw in everyday life. From Van Gogh's work, it is clear that his worldview was shaped by a deep appreciation for nature and a desire to capture its beauty through his art. His paintings often depict the world around him in vivid detail, with bold colors and expressive brushstrokes.
Van Gogh was regarded as one of the greatest Dutch painters. He didn’t become popular until after his death and only recently. His use of vivid colors and emotions changed the way people and gave more knowledge of what art really was. Even though the painting was ruined, many other artists have created their own reinterpretation of his well known painting called “The Painter on the Road to Tarascon”.
Vincent van Gogh Vincent van Gogh was an astound artist in the last ten years of his short life. He began his creative career when he was already twenty-seven years old and died at the young age of thirty-seven. He traveled a lot during his petite life. His artwork, mental illness, and life continue to be a topic for media, art students, and the general public alike. Theodorus van Gogh, a minister, and Anna Carbentus, a bookseller, gave birth to Vincent on March 30, 1853 (“Heilbrunn Timeline…”).
The striking color, emphatic brushwork, and contoured forms of his work strongly influenced the current modern art of Expressionism. Van Gogh’s art became Greatly popular after his death, especially in the late 20th century. He was a great painter, but was he the greatest of all time. In this paper we will go through his early life, his paintings and the legacy he left for everyone to marvel at. Van Gogh was the
For example, Adrian Hill, a man from England with tuberculosis used the idea of “participating in art projects with patients” (The History Of Art Therapy) as a way to help patients to express themselves and more importantly help them express how they are feeling without the use of words. Self expression in the form of art helped the patients be outgoing and confident without worrying that people might judge or make any unnecessary comments about their artwork. The process you go through while creating art is not only stimulating but also helps to “ dig deep and express and explore your inner new self in new ways-unleash buried feelings” (Art Therapy: Healing Through Self-Expression by Meghan Rabbitt). Art allows us to reach into a place that is not only untouched but unedited, expressing a true emotion deep
While Amy, the Doctor, and Vincent were about to part ways, Amy and the Doctor decided to bring Vincent to the future to show him that his artwork was meaningful and to ultimately change his fate. This was one of the most memorable scenes throughout the episode because the emotions that Vincent expressed portrayed immense gratitude that affected the viewers by sympathizing with Vincent’s joy of his new-found worth. Vincent was amazed once he saw that he was in a museum filled with his artwork. When the Doctor asked Dr. Black “…where do you think Van Gogh ranks in the history of art?” (“Vincent and the Doctor”) Vincent was brought to tears by his response and could not believe that he made that much of an impact on the art world or be that memorable of an artist.
Van Gogh was a talented artist that lived in poverty. He wanted the freedom of roaming to his next destination, so he often quit his classes or school. Van Gogh was convinced by his brother Theo to explore his artistic talent. Although, his parents did not agree with his decision to be an artist, Van Gogh continued to practice his art. Van Gogh had a bipolar disorder among other things, and his art was an emotional representation on his visions of life.
The year 1888 resulted in Gogh suffering from a mental breakdown, cutting off part of his left ear, and giving it to a friend (par. 14). Though his life and career, he only sold a single painting (par. 15). His final year in 1890, Gogh committed suicide and the years following was recognized as a famous painter (par. 17). It is said that his work impacted expressionism (par.
I wanted to do this through the examination of personal expression because the relationship an artist had with their work is an extremely personal thing and it always has shown a deeper insight to the artist’s mind. The criteria that I had made for myself to ensure my success in this project were that I had to demonstrate an understanding of the connection between Van Gogh’s art and events in his life, provide an analysis of at least 2 different works, in this case I did 4, and tie them to an event in his life and the possible feelings behind it, and finally I had to create a painting that was identifiable as an interpretation of one of Van Gogh's, I chose Starry Night because it had always been a favorite of mine. My project is an excellent example of all these things as it met all my criteria and was a great demonstration of understanding and presenting the aspects of art that are more than canvas deep. Throughout this project I used my ability to consider other perspectives to analyze van Gogh’s art and draw conclusions about how events in his life affected
You are trapped. You are trapped in the shell of your miserable body. You watch yourself spiral to the brink of insanity with nothing you can do to stop it. Vincent Van Gogh was so mentally disturbed he severed his left ear with a razor blade then gave it to a prostitute whom he loved, but did not love him in return. The post-impressionist mastermind behind pieces such as sunflowers, cafe terrace at night, and the most impacting starry night; the painting in which was composed during a psychotic episode, that depicted turbulence with mathematical accuracy.
Vincent Van Gogh, a famous Dutch painter, lived with bipolar disorder for the majority of his life and despite his mental illness, he still produced many famous paintings, one of his most known is The Starry Night. Although many people have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, they can still live the life they want to live with proper treatments. Bipolar disorder is defined by the National Institute of Mental Health as a “brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to carry out daily tasks” (“Bipolar Disorder in Adults”). In Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, Cathy Earnshaw is described as a spirited and strong willed young child, often getting in trouble. During her adolescent years she kept the same sense of sauciness, but her moods are more varied now: she displays “...seasons of gloom…” as Nelly describes them (Bronte 100).
Art therapy is defined as a form of expressive therapy that uses the creative process of fabricating art to improve a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Well known psychologist Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud both had theories of the subconscious and unconscious. They believed that art therapy is based on the premise that images and visuals are the most natural form of communication to humans. The feelings that stem from the subconscious mind are more easily expressed in visuals rather than verbally because people usually cannot explain emotions in such detail. Creative art therapy is offered in many hospitals, outpatient centers, and private practices as a form of depression treatment.
Depression. An endless struggle towards the surface of an ocean of self-doubt and worries. Mental illness is not always clear to see and can be expressed in many different ways. Vincent Van Gogh expressed this through his many paintings. It may not be apparent when first looking at Van Gogh’s paintings, but after a while, a pattern can be seen or inferred.
Van Gogh’s artwork was made to be a reflection of his emotional state and was created just after he left the St. Remy asylum in 1889.The pale turquoise and green are essentially viewed as a cool, calm colour yet contrasted to his emotional state of feeling ‘blue’ and sad. The eyes are tightly drawn in the centre and builds energy. The eyes were painted to look distressed with a transfixed effect. This was used to allow the viewers see through into his mind and his struggles and the fight he had with the demons of his
However, therapy can also be presented through Art. The use of creativity and expressing yourself, has been used for healing throughout history, but art therapy did not emerge as a distinct profession until the 1940s (The History of Art Therapy).” Art therapy is a mental health tool that utilizes psychotherapeutic techniques and the creative process to develop an individual patient’s self-expression, which can in turn foster growth in the patient’s mental, emotional,
