When he was younger his mom would feed poor strangers the same amount of food as they got, and she split it all equally (Giddens). There were 9.5 million Jews that lived in Europe at the time before the Holocaust (Burk).

In the graphic novel Maus II, Art Spiegelman reveals what hardships his father had to go through to survive his time during the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel depicted what him and his father went through to withstand the suffering in the concentration camps during the holocaust in his autobiography, Night. The connection between these two works from contrasting genres is the relationships and loyalty to family and friendships shown throughout these accounts. When facing critical situations, remaining loyal to your family and friends is more essential to survival than self-preservation and resourcefulness. Having close relationships with friends and family could benefit you by granting you opportunities to receive support, resources and other components to survival.

Despite describing his father as cold, Elie and his father stick together through it all, to his father 's last breath. Even though their sufferings were horrible their relationship improved because before becoming prisoners, they did not spend much time together. Elie is mostly focusing on his religious studies and his father on community meetings. Once they go to the concentration camps their relationship improves and they live mostly for one another. When father and son are taken from their home, they experience harsh conditions in the camps.

From fighting through starvation, long work days, or horrific punishments, inmates who had the hope and will to survive refused to give up. Nardo 's book provides a clear understanding of the lives of the people who survived these atrocious Nazi concentration camps (Nardo). Author, historian, and research Franciszek Piper wrote

However, he remained with his father in a sub camp of Auschwitz called III-Monowitz. A week before the camps liberation, Wiesel’s father was beaten by a SS officer and other inmates for food and he was sent to the crematorium

The second time a son had abandoned a father of theirs is when Rabbi Eliahou had frantically searched for his son during The Death March, which is what happened near the end of the war when the Germans began losing.
