How Diversity Affects Us

In “The Greatest Journey” by James Shreeve, he talks about how we all share the same ancestors and we all come from Africa. He says that it all started in Africa about 200,000 years ago. These people who lived in Africa years ago started to leave the area and expand to Eurasia and Australia. As they were migrating to other places, they were able to adjust to the new environment. This is when everybody started to change because of weather, food, and other factors of environment that affected these people. But even though they separated and reproduced themselves, they were still connected by the same ancestor. As Shreeve states; “Generations later, finding that same mutation, or marker, in two people’s DNA indicates that they share the same ancestor”

Well our race is a culture in which shapes us; it shapes our identity and influences our behavior. Tom saying was that our country is more diverse than any time in the past, and that is correct in my opinion. Our people of the United States represent a strong of different ethnic groups. I look at this scenario as a strength. Because each culture provides an own special and irreplaceable contribution to our understanding of America today. So basically without the different of mixture of religious, race, and different cultures, America would not be the nation that it is today. When I was reading about this assignment I was excited to read that I got to watch a movie, but I didn’t know what movie to choose. I decided to Google movies about diversity. I came up with a few titles and then watched the trailers of them to help me decide which one I wanted to watch. I chose to watch The Butler.

Diversity in the united state has been extended to a broader understanding of what diversity really means. Diversity first meaning is that positions should not be segregated by gender. For example a board of directors should have women on the board and there should be a male as the receptionists. Next be the diversity of wide range of ethnicities like Asian, Hispanics, etc., religions national origins, class. For example people from poor and rich should both be represented.

How could diversity in the United States potentially lead to collapse? There are many elements that contribute to collapse. Whether it’s on a larger scale, like a country, or on a smaller scale, like a family. There is an infinite amount. But the most important one, is diversity. Diversity is showing variety, or being different. It is clear that this could easily lead to the downfall of the United States we know today.

My opinion or what I think about James Brook’s title in his essay “People Like Us” is a good and understandable title for his essay. He puts People Like Us as his title which makes you think a lot about why he chooses that title. It matches really well with the essay because in his essay he explained that America is diverse as a whole, but as individuals we are not. We are diverse in many ways like culture and ethnicity, but when it comes down to individuals were not. James Brooks argued that when it comes down to neighborhood, community, and country we show little sign of diversity. For example, In St. Paul as a whole we are diverse but when we narrow it down we are not because of the ethnicity division like Hmong in the east side St. Paul,

Immigrants bring diversity to the United States, along with their cultures, and skills, which help make us stronger as a nation. A greedy, money-consuming, and lethargic person most likely comes to mind when one thinks of the characteristics of an American. We have somehow managed to earn the stereotype that we abuse our freedom and use it to our advantage. While this may be true to a certain extent, it seems people always forget the positive connotations that contribute to the qualities of a true American. The freedom the United States has is something we gained through hard work and dedication and is nothing to be taken for granted. Despite the stereotypical definition it is most commonly deceived as, an American is someone who supports and lives through the ideas of equality, patriotism, freedom and society while overcoming everyday diversity.

As stated in the previous chapter connection, there are many challenges that stand in the way of urban education. The main issue discussed in chapter 10 of the book “Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education” by Sonia Nieto and Patty Bode, was the issue of bilingual programs never having enough support by schools. Hello Clara, in the first sentence, do you believe that diversity makes America stronger? Or just the overall highly populated land is what makes America strong? But, I agree, the political structure does become different once immigrants start becoming citizens and begin voting. Since we have individuals immigrating from Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, etc. They all have experienced a different background, so they are all seeking a different form of freedom or opportunities. Lastly, politicians are aware of the diversity in America, so when elections come around some make sure to include the wants and needs of the new citizens—formerly foreign immigrants.

Those are the words that I preached to my best friend Juan that still ring through my mind. This was the sentence that proved that I was becoming wise. This was the sentence that could change the world around me.

According to its preamble, diversity is a defining characteristic of humanity and cultural diversity creates a rich and varied world, which increases the range of choices and nurtures human capacities and values, and therefore is a mainspring for sustainable development for communities, peoples and nations.
