Addiction influenced authors to write with their own individuality and make it easier for them to explain themselves. Authors who suffer with addiction portray their own individuality through the books they write. In fact, those who struggle with addiction “are more likely to have poor interpersonal relationships, live alone, have higher levels of aggression and impulsivity, and have an overall negative outlook on life” (Effects of Alcoholism on Behavior). An example of an author who suffers with addiction is F. Scott Fitzgerald, who was addicted to alcohol. Fitzgerald reflected his own addiction of alcohol to the characters that exist within The Great Gatsby.
Many female authors have written books using pen names to avoid bias from readers and disguise their gender. E. Bennet stated, “Rowling’s publishers feared that young boys-the presumed audience of the Harry Potter series-wouldn’t take the boom seriously if they knew it was written by a woman.” This means that Joanne Rowling’s publishers had her use the name J.K Rowling in fear that using her actual name would cause bias among young boys. Avoiding bias is a big part of writing for many authors. This ensures that they can be successful in career, and using a pen name is one way that they can achieve their goal. Some authors like to switch up genres from time to time by using pen names to publish books with different topics.
For me, this book connected with me a lot, because I am an overweight ten that struggles with self-esteem and personal development. This book will be a staple in my home. I believe that Artichoke’s Heart is a well-written book, and I hope to read other Suzanne Supplee books. The author uses the actions and quotes of characters to characterize them indirectly. The diagnosis of Rosemary’s mom is used to build suspense in the reader’s mind, and the reader doesn’t know if her mother will die from that terminal illness or if she will survive.
Rex 's habit of drinking was more than just a problem, he showed the main signs of being an alcoholic. The patterns that he showed include drinking regularly, heavily, and long periods of sobriety brought on by extended binge drinking for weeks to months (Bower 75). Rex would be considered a situational drinker, which is a person that only drinks when they are under stress. They usually drink alone without social interaction (Frey 46). In The Glass Castle Rex always resorted to alcohol when life did not deal him a good hand of cards.
Edgar Allen Poe was an American writer who wrote many poems and stories during his 40 years of life. His beginning of being a writer was met with a lot of negativity, and many magazines he tried to be published in rejected his submissions. It was only in his later years that he was able to get some of his stories and poems published. He is known to be one of the originators of horror and detective fiction. Also, he was a literary critic, which made him some enemies as well.
This is evident whenever he meets someone, because he invariably asks them “Want to have a drink?” (Hemingway 64). Barnes’ way of fitting in with people is to get to know them over a drink. However, because of this activity, Jake is frequently drunk. Matts Dojos says that “Between Paris, Pamplona, and Burguete, Jake gets very drunk at least three times” (66). Some may say that Barnes is only a heavy drinker, and entitled to this because of the wound he received on the Italian front in World War I, but “ there is a considerable difference between heavy drinking and the kind of self-destructive, alcoholic drinking
Political “Bombshell” “Sex is part of nature. I go along with nature.” ―Marilyn Monroe (“Marilyn Monroe”). What’s ironic about this quote is that this way of thinking led to Marilyn Monroe’s many problems in life with her scandalous affairs and wild sex life. Monroe was known as quite the promiscuous woman as well as a depressed train wreck who was destroying her career/life with drugs and other unhealthy substances. This lifestyle led her to make numerous reckless decisions such as getting involved with politicians which would eventually lead to her passing (Lindsey).
My favorite one is “Sometimes you make choices in life and sometimes choices make you.” Which in my opinion is true, because you are who you are and if you make a choice of doing something good and right, that 's just showing the goodness of your character, of you. Another quote that lines up with the theme of this book is “People believe what they want to believe.” Like Mia did, I want spoil the book if you decide to read it. I believe that this novel is fantastic. I also believe that if you read this book that you will enjoy it. This book isn’t just about romance it’s about life, this book is so intense I felt that I was in that book living in the characters shoes.
His books have always been there when I was down and just something about them has a way of making my day seem better. I guess it makes me think at least my day isn’t going as bad as the people in this book. Stephen Kings books seem to have given me an escape when things got bad or when things got tough and I just needed to take a step back and relax for a second. I am thankful that Stephen King has written such wonderful books to help me through the hurdles in my life while I found ways to work through them. One day I would love to meet Stephen King and thank him for writing such amazing novels that have helped me through my life ever since my uncle had given me the first Stephen King book I had ever
Dido is someone that has been through many troubles and this article shows just how easy she seems to”fall in love” with Aeneas. In the book it states that Dido begged for Aeneas to tell her his story, even though, he told her that it would be very painful for him to talk about. This alone shows that dido does not really feel love for Aenas because if she did she would not want him to tell a story that would end up in him being hurt. Dido seems to only lust for Aeneas instead of loving him for the person that he is on the inside. This article states this about Dido (“ Dido did not take her life to save her virtuous reputation, but because her status had been
1) According to webmd the rates for girls ages 10-14 has more than doubled to 68 out of 1,000. Common reasons for depression is sometimes when some of the chemicals stop working your brain, and when you are under mental and physical trauma or abuse. The author is trying to hint that he can help people and to not let his reputation or rumors get in the way.
In the story, Paige is pressured to be perfect and make no mistakes and this often happens in real life. I was rooting for Paige because, she needed to step away from those who projected negativity and spend more time with those who made her happy. I think the night of the crash needed more explanation because sometimes you had to figure out if you read about a certain detail. I would recommend this book to any high school student because it opens your eyes to the fact that drinking and driving can change your life! In the story, there were multiple characters that sounded like myself or someone I know.
Most people will want to believe most homeless people are drug addicts or alcoholics, but most people will be surprise to know that it is no all true.
