To Kill a Mockingbird is a story about racial prejudice and how life was in the 30’s. One of the main characters in this story is Atticus Finch. He is the father of Scout and Jem Finch. He is also a lawyer who worked on the Tom Robinson case. He is a very honest and caring man who would do anything for his family and friends. Atticus’ character traits show his loyalty, courageousness, and how caring he is towards everyone. He shows his loyalty towards the Tom Robinson case in many different ways. Even though he's white he still defends a black man. The entire town was against Atticus and his decision to defend Tom, but he stood up for what he thinks is right. Another way Atticus shows how courageous he can be is when he decides to spend the night alone outside the jail making sure Tom Robinson would be ok. Even when most of Maycomb came and tried to jump Tom and Atticus, he still wouldn't budge and continued to still stick up for Tom. Atticus shows how caring he is towards not only his children, but to the people of Maycomb in many different ways. He doesn't try to upset his children ever, he doesn't yell at them, or hit them when they misbehave. Instead he sits down and conversates with them. Another way Atticus shows how caring he is, is when he lets the people he defends in court not pay him back in money, but in food. Most of the people in Maycomb are broke and dont have enough money to repay him back for his work, so he takes a different form of payment in hickory seeds or collard greens.
