He dies an honorable death, having spared his kingdom of the dragon.
“…The sounds of roaring, clanging and swishing radiates off the barrows walls. Beowulf , wields his shield to protect himself from the grotesque talons of the dragon, as well as the raging fires that singe his facial hair. The dragon writhes around in anger, trying to burn him to a crisp. Beowulf swings his sword with all his strength, but only gives the dragon a simple scratch. This makes the dragon seethe with rage, and it begins to become more aggressive towards Beowulf.
This helps depict this Grendel as a child-like creature, who does not wish to harm others. Finally, the differing reasons of the two Grendels’ decision to attack Herot is a direct result of their physical features. Heaney’s Grendel has no known physical weakness, so he chooses to attack Herot out of anger and evil, leading to the clash of humanity and monstrosity when Beowulf defeats Grendel. On the contrary, Zemecki’s Grendel is the one first struck by physical pain due to his sensitive ears. He thus attacks in retaliation, creating a fight between himself and Beowulf and the rest of the

Beloved Beowulf…” Pg81, King Hrothgar to Beowulf These two quotes are essential to the story of Beowulf, as it describes Beowulf’s sincere character, his valor and loyalty to those he meets. The quotes above carry themselves throughout the story, as our protagonist proves again and again that his good nature, and incorruptible character is faithful to the end. Beowulf retained that personality, while still remaining a noble warrior in the battlefield, slaying hundreds upon hundreds of those who threaten his homeland. And when the dragon awoke from his slumber among riches, and terrorized people of Beowulf’s land with torrents of dragon fire, Beowulf took it upon himself to end the dragon where it stood, instead of having further
“Beowulf” is an old English heroic poem written in the Anglo-Saxon Era. While the battles of Beowulf were mesmerizing, the concept of defending the civilians throughout the whole poem was self- evident. Even so, the poem contains many types of archetypes; situational, character and symbolic. Beowulf hears the monstrous acts of Grendel and sets forward towards a quest to conquer the wild beast.
Since Beowulf lost his life in the battle, the statement presents a compelling argument for the opinion Beowulf insufficiently planned to battle the dragon. During the build up to the fatal battle the author writes, “Yet the prince of the rings was too proud to line up with a large army against the sky-plague. He had scant regard for the dragon as a threat” (Heaney, 2345-2348). Exhibiting Beowulf’s immense courage, the
In lines 725-729, “he raised his sword and struck at the dragon’s scaly hide. The ancient blade broke, bit into the monster’s skin, drew blood, but cracked and failed him before it went deep enough”. Beowulf’s strength was very weak that he couldn’t cut the dragon with his sword. Beowulf tried to defeat the dragon. In lines 682-685, “No one else could do what I mean to, here, no man but me could hope to defeat this monster.
13.) In the beginning, Herot was being savagely attacked by Grendel and lives were being taken for twelve straight winters. He was “so set on murder that no crime could ever be enough, no savage assault quench his lust for evil” (lines 50-53). Finally, the brave warrior Beowulf arrives to Herot and murders the devious Grendel. Seeking revenge, Grendel’s mom slyly arrives at Herot and snatches only one victim.
This make the hero face a challenge and the beginning of change. When Beowulf had heard about Grendel he got a ship and sailed
The epic poem “Beowulf”, translated by Burton Raffel, focuses on a hero by the name of Beowulf who goes on a quest to rescue King Hrothgar and his people from an egregious monster by the name of Grendel. This Anglo-Saxon tale gives insight into the values and beliefs of the people from whom the story originated. Their war-centered ideology and views on loyalty and courage were the principles that the Anglo-Saxon culture was founded upon. While warfare was a focal point in their lifestyle, it was far from a savage, barbaric state of fighting. Honor and prestige were bestowed upon those who died during battle and selflessness for fellow warriors was a fundamental belief.
In today’s society, anybody can be considered a hero. A hero is a selfless person who is admired for their courageous achievements. A mother, celebrity, or even a mailman can be a hero to someone. In Beowulf, the epic poem translated by Burton Raffel, Beowulf is recognized as a hero who craves too much glory. In today’s world, Beowulf is viewed as an irrelevant hero since he displays poor qualities of arrogance and selfishness.
Heroism of Beowulf Throughout the poem of Beowulf he shows heroism in different way, He is someone who has superhuman qualities who embodies the value of his society and who is larger than life. And also someone who defeats something that is bigger than him. To start off, Beowulf meets with the Danes to discuss about this evil monster name Grendel. He is a powerful creature who live in the darkness.
As the story progress, Beowulf became king of the Geats for 50 years when suddenly a dragon emerged from slumber began to burn down villages. However, Beowulf didn’t pay the slightest attention, but instead ignored what was happening. Finally, when the dragon burns down Beowulf’s throne room Beowulf decided that he needs to deal with the dragon. In Beowulf 's eyes, the lives of his citizens couldn’t even compare to his throne room. When Beowulf prepared to fight the dragon he said, “Now I am old, but as king of the people I shall pursue this fight for the glory of winning” (lines 2512-2514).
