Atticus Finch once said, “You never understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” (Harper 39) Harper Lee’s novel, “To Kill A Mockingbird”, is a story that has a lot to do with the acceptance of all types of people. One way the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” shows acceptance is Dolphus Raymond marrying a black woman. The second way the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” shows acceptance is Calpurnia being a mother figure to Atticus’s kids. Another way the novel “To Kill A Mockingbird” shows acceptance is Atticus defending Tom Robinson. I will show why these are as such. Dolphus Raymond is a white man and he is married to a black woman. He accepts them for the type of people they are. Other citizens in the county of Maycomb believe there is a reason behind his “drastic” decisions. Dolphus pretends to be a drunk to provide the other white people with an explanation for his lifestyle, but he actually isn’t a drunk, because inside of his paper bag is simply Coca Cola. Dolphus does this so others do not bother him about the decision he has made, and his decision is showing he accepts that type of people, and that he isn’t prejudice. …show more content…
She came in to help Atticus with Scout and Jem after the death of their mother. Even though she is a African American she still is a mother figure to Jem and Scout. Jem and Scout also accept Calpurnia as their mother figure even though she is not their mother. This shows that she accepts them for the type of people they are, and that she isn’t
Importance of Details Kathreen Perez 1)Interesting Traxler, 3 Chapter 20 detail: -The whole county thinks that Mr. Raymond drinks whiskey, but he is actually drinking coca-cola in a bag. During the 1930's, racism raged through every corner of the United States, and the imaginary district of Maycomb County displayed the effects of injustice brought upon the African-American community during that time period.
In my opinion… Calpurnia and Aunt Alexandra are both great mother figures to Jem and Scout. They both have their own traits. Calpurnia is a great mother figure. When the dog came she made sure the kids were safe inside and were all right. She then called Atticus and told him about it so he could come and help out with it.
Zach Gutierrez English 9 Mr. Bevins May 1, 2023 To Kill a Mockingbird In Harper Lee’s novel “To KIll a Mockingbird”, the story shows the acceptance of all types of people in many different ways. One example of acceptance being sown is Atticus choosing to defend an African American man, despite the thoughts of others. The choice of Atticus would move on to shape the rest of the story. Many people in the book such as Atticus Finch, Boo Radley, And Tom Robinson are those who had to face the act of not being accepted by others at first.
In society today there are those that are pushed out of the crowd because of what they look like, how they act, and what others say to be true about them. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows that unselfish, kind hearted people can experience prejudice from others. Always wanting to be the better person, Atticus Finch is like the mockingbird when taking the responsibility of defending Tom Robinson, who is a black man. Once Atticus gets the news that he will be defending Tom Robinson, who is accused of rape, he is very stressed until the end of the trial. Harper Lee shows this when she says, “It’s this Tom Robinson case that’s worrying him to death...”
Calpurnia serves as an amazing role model and mother figure to the children, and yet Aunt Alexandra wants to fire her. She had raised Jem and Scout, and plays an indispensable part of their lives, showering them with discipline, structure, and love. Aunt Alexandra, however, barely existed in the children 's lives up until she moved into the Finch’s home, yet she inflicts great injustice on Calpurnia by failing to recognize the necessitous part of the family that Calpurnia fills. Scout even overhears Aunt Alexandra saying, "...you 've got to do something about her. You 've let things go on too long Atticus, too long.
During Gilmer’s cross-examination, the narrator states, ”For some reason Dill had started crying and couldn’t stop; quietly at first, then his sobs were heard by several people in the balcony”(265). This shows that Dill, who still has more innocence due to his lack of exposure to racism compared to Scout and Jem is upset enough to the point that he cries, and Scout doesn’t even understand why he’s so sad. When talking to Dolphus Raymond, Dolphus says, ”You aren’t thin-hided, it just makes you sick, doesn’t it?”(266). This quote shows that Dolphus understands that Dill can’t bear Mr.Gilmer and the evil in
Throughout Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird," Atticus Finch serves as a model of tolerance. He consistently demonstrates his conviction that others should be treated with empathy and understanding. One of the most prominent examples of Atticus' tolerance is his defense of Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman. Despite the community's intense racism and prejudice, Atticus maintains his belief in Tom's innocence and fights for his rights in court. This shows his tolerance and acceptance of people of different races and his refusal to be swayed by the prejudices of others.
Calpurnia is a good mother figure. When Jem does not want to play with Scout anymore, Cal comforts her and says she can spend time with her. She keeps them clean and cares about them. Before Cal took them to her church she made them “soap all over twice and drew fresh water in the tub for every rinse” (Lee, 156). She even says “I don’t anyone sayin’ I don’t look after my children” (Lee, 157).
Raymond then met his wife, who is black. Ever since he got married to a black woman, the town of Maycomb had looked down on him just as they do on the rest of the black folks. Even though Dolphus Raymond came from a good, white family just like anyone else from Maycomb, he is hated just the same as the black folks but still does not wish to start controversy. Dolphus Raymond represents
Calpurnia is also a good mother figure for the children, because she can provide them with more culture and knowledge that they can use when they get older. When Scout, Jem, and Calpurnia went to church with Calpurnia, they learned valuable information about a community different than their own. Calpurnia was also very smart when there was a rabid dog. Because it was in the wrong season no one thought that it was true, but Calpurnia did and her never giving up saved people's lives. Lastly, Calpurnia teaches Scout and Jem that even though you know something does not mean you have to show it off all of the time and intimidate people.
“Cry about the simple hell people give other people—without even thinking. Cry about the hell white people give colored folks, without even stopping to think that they’re people, too”(Lee 269). Dolphus Raymond is a white man who came rich family. But he chose to marry a black woman and had children with her.
She makes people reevaluate the relationship that black people can have with white people, by showing the close and nurturing relationship that she has primarily with Scout, but also with Jem. Her continual dedication to caring for Jem and Scout is not something that they would necessarily realize, but subconsciously they know what she does for them and how much concern and love she puts into looking after them. Even though it is her job to cook and look after the kids, she has this bond that makes her more like a surrogate mother towards them, in which it could be because she has been with them before Scout was born. However, Calpurnia has this never ending love that she feels towards the kids, and no matter what, it will never go away. She will always feel the need to look after and care for these kids that she has grown to love so
Calpurnia is Jem and Scouts mother figure, because their mother died due to a sudden heart attack. Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout to her church, First Purchase, and introduces them to the fact that not all black people are bad people. She shows courage because it’s nerve racking to bring 2 white children to an all black church. Calpurnia says, “I don’t want anybody sayin’ I don’t look after my children” (Lee pg. 118). Calpurnia takes pride in Jem and Scout and shows a massive amount of courage taking these children to her type of life, and to her church.
Effects of Racism “Racism is taught in our society, it is not automatic. It is learned behavior toward persons with dissimilar physical characteristics. ”-Alex Haley To Kill A Mockingbird is a novel that is greatly affected by the way others see the world. Scout, a young girl, growing up in Maycomb a place where racism is accepted.
In To Kill a Mockingbord,Harper Lee Clearly shows how wide spread prejudice is, by using Atticus's standpoint ,Boo Radely, and mostly Tom Robinson's standpoint. Tom Robinson and Boo Radely are not once ever close to being given a chance. The whole reason Tom died because he was not given a chance, but because he had black skin, and also because he was prejudged by most of Maycomb. He was convicted guilty of murder, and ended upshot and killed by seventeen bullets because of his black
