This symbolism includes symbols that appear in emblems, on uniforms, pennants and flags as well as military dog tags and on headstones in military cemeteries. The history of government using headstones goes back before the Veterans Administration and the National Cemetery Administration were founded, they have roots that can be traced back to America's frontier days. Garrison commanders would take on the responsibility of burying their soldiers. However, it was not until the creation of the national army that was established at the beginning of the Civil War that army regulations assigned the national commanders of the military with the responsibility
How can someone express something, like one of the many issues in todays society, in a more subtle way without taking away any of the problem’s zeal? This question can be answered by the use of a symbol. Harper Lee uses many symbols throughout her book, To Kill a Mockingbird, and has discovered a way to use them exquisitely. In the book, Harper Lee introduces these symbols through telling the story of Macomb County. Throughout the book different problems and circumstances arise in order to subject the reader to think about how they would try to deal with the issues shown, and in this many symbols are revealed.

Through Ken Kesey’s use of Christian imagery throughout One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, but especially in this final section, Kesey allows McMurphy’s altruistic ways to shine through, giving the men of the ward a sense of individuality. Foremost, Kesey utilize a biblical reference when Bromden describes McMurphy as “a giant come out of the sky to save us from the Combine” (234). Bromden’s description is a direct reference to the second coming of Jesus Christ. In the book of Mark, it is described that “At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory” (Mark 13:26). In this way, Kesey compares McMurphy to Christ’s second coming.
