International Relations refers to the states and the international activities of state and nonstate organizations. In regards to international security, which is the ability of a nation or a group of nations to ensure safety to not only the citizens but across the globe, organizations work together to mutual safety of multiple nations. Some organizations whose main priority is ensuring international security and peace are the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU), in which both organizations are have a solid amount of nations as members. Although there are other organizations with similar goals, these are known as the primary ones. Some of these potential threats can include climate change, resource shortages, and nuclear proliferation/war. Climate change is an important threat to international security for various reasons. Primarily, climate change can cause an issue regarding international security because it test the world’s communities. For example, in 2016 the Paris agreement within the United Nations was signed by a number of nations, in an agreement of the nations committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions starting in 2020. This is an important example when understanding how climate change effects international security because it forces nations to decide whether or not they are willing to take efforts to benefit the environment. This can cause issue among nations that disagree on whether or not they should get involved in actions against climate change. Nuclear weapons and the use of them have been a debatable topic among the United Nations for years. In fact, the United States are the only country in history to actually use nuclear weapons although many countries have been known to test nuclear weapons. Nuclear proliferation is a threat to international security for various reasons. One specifically being the health effects the use of nuclear weapons can have on an individual. If able to survive, a person can have long-lasting effects to their health. The use of nuclear weapons can also negatively affect a nation by the financial deficit that will come to rebuild the nation after destruction. The biggest threat to international security in regards to nuclear proliferation, is due to the power battle that builds the possibility for a nation to use nuclear weapons. For example, if Russia began threatening the United States with the use of nuclear weapons, the United States and its allies will began preparing for the threat and building tension to use weapons. Although this is an ongoing debate, there are potential solutions to limit the risk of international security through nuclear weapons. A solution can be completed through global organizations like the United Nations; in which they can implicate a mandatory treaty amongst countries against using nuclear weapons.
