Cole was a troubled kid, Who grew up with alcoholic parents who nearly beat him his Entire childhood and he beat up this kid named Peter and he goes to the circle of justice to decide what Cole's consequence is so they decide to bring Cole to this island where he gets attacked by a bear and suffers in the cold. I think Cole changes by having a deathly experience, having to be lonely and the fact that he had no power or control on the island that changed him into a different person.
Cole's deathly experience changed him and his perspective on life he nearly almost died by getting mauled by a bear and starts to fade away and he's almost certain he is going to die and no one’s going to save him. This near death experience changed his life and changed him to be a better person and no longer has aggressive behavior coming from that island. “At that moment, Cole realized how badly he wanted to live. The food he had thrown up was still food. Those fish bits still contained energy, and energy was life. No thieving seagull was going to steal life from him. He jerked his arm at the gulls. "Mine," he grunted. "That's mine”(pg 52 mikaelson).

By being alone Cole felt sorry for himself and by that it changed his perspective on things about who he was. “A bitter loneliness swept over Cole as tears clouded his Vision he felt so small here”(pg 44
(Mikaelsen 249). This is a drastic change from the beginning of the novel, where Cole hates everyone and everything and only thinks of himself. Near the very end of the story, Peter attacks Cole and Cole asks him to stop but he refuses to fight back. The old Cole would’ve fallen down and come up swinging as hard as he could. I believe he has truly changed from how he had previously acted.
Coles Journey with Healing and Forgiveness Stephen Richards said, “When you forgive, you heal”?Cole is the protagonist in the book “Touching Spirit Bear” Garvey was Cole’s parole officer who helps Cole. Cole's Dad beat him so Cole beats up Peter at the beginning of the book, but he ended up helping him at the end. Cole's Dad, Garvey, and Peter affect Cole’s healing in negative or positive ways. Garvey helped with Cole's healing and forgiveness by sending him to the island.
Wait, I think I'm going too far and putting my life here, so now Cole is banished to an island and mauled by the Spirit Bear. And I honestly think that Cole deserved it, because it changed him to become better and not worse, and he has found meaning in life and has changed for the better. And I think Cole will be able to change, because after he has touched the Spirit Bear, he feels trusted and he trusts the Spirit Bear in return, and he finally views the world as beautiful unlike before. Lastly, I think after Cole returns from his banishment, the people in circle justice will want him to undergo normal justice, and then Cole does some crazy things to prove that he has changed, for example pushing a rock up and down a hill. So in summary, I think Cole is broken, Cole
Once she tried to stop mr. Mathews, and he threatened to beat her too. When Cole comes back to then, he realises that he has gone nowhere. He is confused, nearly numb and freezing his butt off. He forgot to consider the low and high tide. When he returns back to the island, he decides to stay and consider some other way to escape.
Additionally, it is evident that Cole does not own up to his actions and refuses to take responsibility. However as the story progresses, he faces a near death experience when he is mauled by the Spirit Bear. Due to this particular event he becomes significantly more empathetic than depicted previously. When it is brought to Cole’s attention that Peter has attempted to commit suicide he is rather discomposed and even proves to have had astounding growth within his ability to feel empathetic. Moreover, Cole even offers to do what it takes in order to help his wounded peer, Mikaelsen writes, “‘Would you be willing to stay here longer if it meant helping Peter?’
The circle decides to isolate him on a remote island to help him change. When on the island Cole is mauled by a spirit bear. After months of rehabilitation, he is sent back to the Island. After a long time of hard labor, he finally sees that he needs to let go of his anger. The one character that I think made the biggest difference to Cole was Garvey.
At the beginning of the novel, Cole Matthews is a vicious teenager who thinks he is superior to everyone, but is, in fact, hiding behind a shield of anger, the result of being brutally abused by his drunken father. Cole’s father, Mr. Matthews, drinks non stop until he becomes a monster, and then ruthlessly beats Cole up. When talking to Garvey, a proud, Tlingit indian, who is also his parole officer, Cole opens up about his father’s abuse saying, “‘You don’t know what it’s like being hit over and over until you’re so numb you don’t feel anything!” (Mikaelsen 28).
In human nature, fear is a big part of how we act, but there is one thing that we are the most afraid of, loneliness. People are often social people, and when you take out the possibility of talking and communicating to someone, you will feel a kind of sadness. There are people who are absolutely fine with being lonely, but most of the human population will not be able to stand it. In Teju Cole’s book “Open City”, Cole creates a character that represents the sadness and fear of being alone. Loneliness is something that we can never get over, the main character in Open City, Julius, was forced to deal with the fact that he was indeed alone, without anyone there to comfort him, and even if he had found someone, it would not last long, and the only thing that Julius wants, is to able to be free.
During his time on the island, Cole undergoes a physical and emotional transformation. Initially, he reacts to
Baker continues to speak of how Cole had begun to follow him around as he performed his daily and weekly tasks such as cutting wood and feeding the livestock. On one specific trip will Baker had forgotten his son was trailing him. Baker believed he was alone. Baker was in an almost dreamy state it seems as one finds themselves falling into when in seclusion. His son jolts him out of his imagination with this statement, ‘“We’re alone together, aren’t we dad?”’
Everything will turn out right in the end, and Cole exhibits this. The whole reason that Cole ended up o the island in the first place is because he made bad choices. These choices led to more bad choices and then Cole had a traumatic experience. This changes Cole’s life forever.
Cole was beaten by him throughout his childhood. This pain and anger gave him the personality and characteristic to inflict pain on other people. The two final themes have a very strong connection. In order to heal, mentally and physically, you have to learn to forgive and receive forgiveness. This was a lesson the reader and the main character, Cole, experience throughout the book.
The relationships in Cole’s life all had a different impact on him but specifically his relationship with Peter affected him a lot. Especially the part of the book when Cole found out that Peter told on him. “‘You’re a dead man,’ he warned... He laughed when he saw fear in Peter’s eyes”(7-8). This shows the relationship at the beginning of the book and clearly it wasn’t good.
Cole emphasizes in his lyrics that “life can’t be no fairytale, no once upon a time; but [he’ll] be God damned if a n***a don’t be tryin’”. Despite all the shortcomings of his city, that won’t stop Cole from trying to make something out of himself. In comparison, I always had to learn things the hard way, and I always failed at what I tried to achieve. However my mistakes never stopped from moving forward and I continue to overcome any obstacles that stand in my way. Living through the hard times motivates me to continuously work hard, and never settle for
For example, when Cole purposy bothered the Spirt Bear and later on ended up getting mauld by the animal. It is obvious that Cole’s decisions and actions against banishment lead him to fail the act. Cole’s consistent negative attitude made him dislike the idea of meaning humane. Since the beginning of the book, Cole has satisfied himself with anger. Cole believes that he can concor anything with his anger.
