When it comes to the President and Congress, many people have different views on who holds the most power. Some people believe the President has more power, some may believe that Congress has more power, and others may think that the two share power equally. While I do believe that the President is one of the most powerful figures in the country, overall I think that Congress does hold more power in most situations. Congress is composed of two different houses: the House of Representatives and the Senate. These two houses are also known as the legislative branch. The main responsibilities of the legislative branch is to make and pass laws. The Senate and the House of Representatives must work together in order to run smoothly. Congress is a huge group, made up of 535 members total. The House of Representatives is composed of 435 members, while the Senate only has 100 members. The fact that there are so many members of Congress, has an advantage over the President, being just one individual. If he chooses to accept the bill, it officially becomes a law. If he vetoes the bill, it goes back to Congress. Congress can then override the veto if each house has at least two thirds of the vote. If both the Senate and the House of Representatives successfully get two thirds of the vote, the bill will become a law, despite the President’s veto. This is one major example of why I believe Congress has more power than the President. There have been many cases where a President chose to veto a bill, but it was still passed as a law because of the vote from Congress.
