Diversity helps us to see what is all around us and that we are all unique people and that we need to respect
There is diversity when it comes to race, age, and education. For example, my manager is a lady of color, and my assistant manager is Hispanic. All the employees ages ranges from 45 to 23 to 19, and more ages in between. Finally, our education is different. I am the only one in college while the rest of the employees were finished after high school.
It is an opportunity to create an environment where all individuals can contribute their unique perspectives and experiences to the collective knowledge. By embracing diversity, we are able to push past our preconceived notions and challenge the status quo. We can create a culture of understanding and respect for all individuals, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation or other differences. Inclusivity allows us to see beyond our own experiences and gain new insights from those who are different from us. This helps us become better problem solvers, innovators and collaborators in whatever field we choose to pursue.
Society is fooled into believing in the applied connection among people. Benedict Anderson’s idea of imagined communities emphasizes that, “… the members of even the smallest nation will never know most of their fellow-members, meet them, or even hear of them, yet in the minds of each lives the image of their communion” (5). Members of neighborhoods, cities, states, or countries feel a sense of unity with other members for living in the same place or maybe having the same basic values, but true unity comes from understanding the similarities among each other, considering the impact a person can have on another, and caring about lives. Recognizing the importance of lives being socially intertwined is necessary to sustain a considerate society.
Diversity plays a big role in my community in, St. Cabrini Nursing Home. As social workers we work in different levels such as micro, mezzo, and macro and within those levels our clients are very diverse in many different ways. Diversity comes in many different forms such as age, race, color, religion, immigration status, culture, disability ethnicity, and sexual orientation. Those are just some or the many that define diversity. Diversity impacts my community in the nursing home because in this nursing home the majority of the residents are all Caucasians and the majority of the staff members are African Americans.

Simply interacting with individuals who are different, forces group members to prepare better, to anticipate alternative viewpoints and to expect that reaching consensus will take effort. But most people view diversity as a good thing because it gives people the chance to experience different things outside of what they are used to. Some studies show that the lack of consistency between races, sexes and cultures is due to mistrust, stereotyping, and more within-culture conversation and language problems. Diversity is a tricky thing to use and understand because it has both negative and positive effects on society such as education, violence and employment.
