Leadership is can mean different things to different people. To me, leadership is more than having a title and subordinates. Leadership is having the courage to make the right choices, engage others in a vision, and empower your subordinates with a shared purpose and to achieve positive impacts. Leadership can also be relational which means it takes teamwork, requires you to be able to work with others in various backgrounds and that may have difference perspectives. Leadership also requires continuous learning, discerned decision making, and savvy communication skills.
My personal belief is that our differences are the things that bring us closer together, having a contrasting character makes you stand out. We each shape our own destiny and to take advantage of any situation in our lives, we have to view the different perspectives life gives us. Each person has a part in the shaping of others destiny’s. I always try to stay positive and encourage people to do the same, this way we encourage happiness. To serve others you need a favorable character, which I believe I posses.
Community work is an essential part of social work. It has been defined as “the process of assisting people to improve their own communities by undertaking autonomous collective actions.”(Twelvetrees, 2001) It entails getting the support of communities members to undertake projects or tasks that would be beneficial for the community. In community work, workers “operate as facilitators with people in relation to what those people decide to become involved with.”(Twelvetrees, 2001) It takes special skills to work within communities especially if the community is not very open to suggestions and the issue to be addressed is sensitive. To be effective in community work, it takes a collaborative effort and partnership to bring about changes and advance the community. When working with communities, the planned change model as developed by Kirst-Ashman & Hull (2009) is a tool that can be utilized.

1. The principles of strength based practice include the recognition of the strengths that exist in every individual, group, family, and community. It involves reframing the commonly adopted practice of noticing deficits within those entities and altering the way we conceptualize challenges, recognizing that however difficult they appear they also present opportunities for change. The individuals’ viewpoints and aspirations need to be accounted for and respected. They greatly benefit from collaborative relationships as well.
With much of the world becoming focused on individual goals and ideas, it is necessary to remember the importance of family relationships. Through family bonds, people may find support that they would not find anywhere else, giving them the strength to push through difficult situations. The support that family relationships provide may be seen with an example from my own life as well as from Elie Wiesel’s novel Night. Family can be very crucial when it comes to dealing with tough situations in life. Many times, family members can make one another feel better and provide support in difficult times.
Everyone in the world today is their own unique person. They have certain characteristics, a certain personality that makes them who they are. While many qualities are very beneficial in life, there are several that are key in determining the type of leader a person is.
