A joint study KPMG and CII reveals that digital advertising industry in India is growing at 33.5 percent (CAGR) and in the next three years, it will be Rs. 255 billion plus industry. But, will GST obstruct the growth? Before reaching to any conclusion, it is advisable to understand the importance of the industry in a growing economy like India.
Significance of Advertising in the Business World
Irrespective of the nature of the business, advertising industry supports all other industries in their growth and promotion. It creates competition among businesses, makes the market more animated and customers more educated about top brands. Eventually, when a business doesn’t invest adequately in advertising it fails in competition; moves slowly in the market competitive and loses customers’ attention. Everyone has seen the commercials on television, the typical ad discussing that a certain, name-brand drug has countless benefits and will treat a condition you were unaware you had until you saw it ten seconds ago in that commercial. The last ten seconds of the ad includes a voice rushing through negative side effects, while showing a woman/man enjoying life to the fullest. There is no mention on what other conditions the drug can treat, who should take the medication, effectiveness of the drug, how it compares with other treatments, or the percentage of patients who experience side effects.
The revenue = advertising x traffic, and if an application like Adblock is on the rise with over 40 million users, how is the revenue of these media sites dependent on advertising affected? One thing is for sure, it requires these websites to rely on more than just traffic and advertising because now that is not cutting it. People everywhere are sick of ads popping up all over the place and now have the power to easily make them disappear with one simple installing. There a few sites, such as Forbes that require viewers to disable Adblock before they can view any material but now people have found ways around that as well. This is a new challenge for websites to overcome and it will be interesting to see how it is dealt with since advertisers will no longer be getting the coverage and exposure they were once promised.
