The Outsiders is a novel written by S.E. Hinton and takes place in Oklahoma during the 1960s. One theme in this novel that stands out most to me is loyalty. The story is told by Ponyboy Curtis, and illustrates his conflict with right and wrong in his world, where he feels like an outsider. Loyalty to Ponyboy means giving and receiving honor, integrity, trust, support, family, pride, honesty and faithful to those closest to him. And according to Ponyboy, loyalty is what keeps his gang, “The Greasers”, together. He and his orphaned brothers have grown up with these other kids and know each other well.
