The use of steroids in major league sports has greatly influenced the way America’s pastimes are enjoyed. In the story of Jose Canseco, he attempts to convince me on several fronts that his use of steroids was neither bad nor significant. Throughout his story he explains to the readers about the shortcomings of baseball through opinions and his own personal experiences. After all is said he does make a compelling argument about the use of performance enhancing drugs, however he fails to convince me on all pillars of persuasion. He tells us ethically that his use had very little influence on him, while making us passionate in his quest to be the best, all the while making his argument logical. I found that his argument here is flawed regardless …show more content…
“It’s just human nature to feel awkward and afraid when you first experience something, and when I had my first couple shots of steroids, I was so nervous it was just ridiculous.” (49) Can something really be ethical if it makes you that nervous? Canseco is trying to justify his use of steroids by simply saying well everyone gets nervous. Due to Canseco’s steroid use his baseball performance was at a peak which allowed him to travel playing baseball and meeting “road beef.” (96) “Any girl you met on the road and had sex with….It just meant a piece of meat, a piece of ass for the player to enjoy while he was away from home.” (96) Jose was gifted with the ability to play baseball and travel mostly due to his steroid use, while away he could not even stay loyal to his own wife. The same wife who helped him inject himself, he cheats on for women met on the road. Jose Canseco says that his use of steroids did not contribute to a “roid rage” effect however Jessica may have a different perspective. When Jose says “Jessica and I started arguing while we were in a friend’s car…. I pulled her hair.” (189) Could these arguments have started with or without steroids, possible. However not in the same magnitude due to his steroid use. Commonly people believe that steroids have the ability to make people go into a “roid rage” or an agitated delirium. This is where you see the typical underdog battling the odds to achieve the most, which who does not enjoy a story as such. “I remember every now and then, Ozzie and I would play around, either kicking each other or trying out some of Bruce Lee’s other moves.” (24) Jose is forming his rapport with the reader, he connects by bringing up nostalgic memories of playing with family members. In forming this connection he also succeeds in covering up his present reputation given by racial factors. “My dad earned a good living in Cuba during the Batista years, working as a territory manager for Esso Standard Oil.” (17) By saying this Canseco proclaims being Cuban resulted in a negative experience both in life and baseball specifically. With deep roots in the Cuban culture, for him to come to America puts him completely out of his comfort zone to a point where he questions himself being here. “They are nothing to mess around with casually, and if anything, devoting yourself to the systemic use of steroids means you have to stay away from recreational drugs.” (1) As Jose says this throughout the novel he talks about people he helped inject and then people who died due to drug interactions. Jose has good intentions with stating this on the first page however completely contradicts himself as the book progresses. Additional Jose
“For while Bonds ' alliance with the weight trainer and the nutritionist may have helped him hit 73 home runs in 2001, it also involved him in what may become sports ' worst doping scandal.” (Fainaru-Wada, Williams 2003) Barry Bonds is now the hitting instructor for the Miami Marlins. Barry Bonds to this day still denies ever using
The use of PEDs in sports raises questions about fairness, safety, and the integrity of athletic
He had a career average of .266 with 462 homeruns and 1407 RBI during his seventeen years in the big leagues. But like Rose, Canseco made a mistake during his career. His mistake forced him into earlier retirement. Canseco not only used steroids, but he also injected five of his teammates with steroids. Canseco tells his story in his memoir— Juiced: Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits & How Baseball Got Big.
Jose got ripped, but Mark remained lanky,” (McGwire 123). It was simply Jay’s word against Jose’s. No one will probably ever know the real truth, but what is accurate is Mark using steroids. He even admitted it himself and sent a shockwave through baseball. What is also certain is Mark McGwire will always be Matt Trusty’s baseball hero, regardless of the steroid scandal.
WRI 110 College Composition Dr. Hoag 11/2/17 Performance Enhancing Drugs Barry Bonds. What a controversial name. A name that shook a whole league, and a name that brings a taint to the sports world surrounding drugs. As a baseball player for the San Francisco Giants, Bonds had one of the biggest bats in the league and quickly became one of the most popular. Throughout his years with the Giants he shattered several MLB records: most notably through his home runs, which could infatuate a whole stadium from their sheer distance.
You may see that the credit now must go to the steroids, but steroids do not make up McGwire 's personality, hard-work, and dedication. Steroids built Mark McGwire’s playing abilities up to a new level, but the steroids do not make someone work as hard as
Rodriguez has become the steroid era’s Lord Voldemort”(Moehringer 2). He has this stigma that surrounds him now, everything he has done is now taken with a grain of salt. The comparison of Rodriguez to Voldemort just shows how infamous he actually is. People will automatically associate him with steroids now rather than his achievements in baseball, hence the pained groans people make when his name is brought up. Now Rodriguez will be allowed to play baseball again, and five years when he retires he might be voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, but most people will want an asterisk
In “Cheating and CHEATING” by Joe Posnanski, he is responding to Pete Hamill and arguing against him, unlike Moller’s article that is a personal experience. Posnanski tells facts on cheating in the baseball games such as “Leo Durocher and the Giants, who rigged an elaborate sign stealing system”(556).He mentions drugs and tells just what he’s read about which is the good and the bad side of them. His article is centered on Willie Mays as it should be as a response with him being the focus. Moller on the other hand, author of “We, the Public, Place the Best Athletes on Pedestals” had actually taken Ritalin a handful of times to study with and personally felt the effects kick in “hypersensitized, stuffed-up, sweaty, wide-eyed mess, but I studied until I heard the birds chirping. And I aced my test” (Moller, 545).He sees personally the pull of drugs to perform better in scholarly work for himself and understands personally why the baseball player’s would do the same.
A step in this direction is the new drug testing program that was negotiated and approved by the owners and players for the 2005 season. It is far more comprehensive, intrusive, and punitive than the 2002 program that it replaced. Time will tell whether the new program will rid the sport of the blight which allows juiced-up players to achieve phony records that overshadow authentic accomplishments (Staudohar. 2005).” All players work hard everyday, but the ones who are taking steroids to get ahead faster are just cheating themselves. Although, there could be a brighter side to steroid use.
Drugs For Thugs “A positive drug test can destroy an athlete 's career and tarnish his or her legacy”(Porterfield,25). Fans look up to athletes as role models but since fans look up to them so much they do things to stay at the top of there games. Yes athletes want to be the best in the league but it doesn 't take drugs to become that it takes hard work so why do it. So I think there should be a harsher punishment for athletes caught using steroids and performance drugs because of health problems, it gives them an unfair advantage plus it gives the sport and athletes a bad reputation.
I found more research on Chittom, Lynn-nore and Ann Griswold. "Counterpoint: Performance Enhancing Drugs Should Be Banned. " Points of View: Steroids,. This tells me why we should ban steroid use to people who are misusing them. The research also tells me that athletes are misusing steroids and that they should be banned.
There are many arguments supporting the ban of PEDs from professional sports. A science-based argument against the use of PEDs in sports includes the possible side effects that accompany PEDs. Using PEDs can be detrimental to ones health and each drug comes with different unwanted side effects. The side effects range from superficial problems to long-term high-risk medical problems. The side effects aren’t just physiological but psychological too.
The question which is on most people minds is what to do with the records of those who are caught using steroids. In a 2005 ESPN poll, more than 60% of respondents wanted the player who used steroids to have their records erased and to eliminate them from the possibility in joining the Baseball Hall of Fame (Cohen, 2005). In an NPR poll, 45% wanted a steroid abuser to have their records stricken from the archives of baseball (Memmott, 2013). MLB should implement a program where on day one all players are briefed about what will happen and to ensure it has consequences. One implementation to this policy is that those in violation while using steroids will cause their team to forfeit any and all games in which that player played.
Lastly (transition), many athletes that use steroids are better than their opponents, by cheating. Athletes that use steroids should have bigger consequences. First of all (transitions), reports show that athletes that use steroids have a number of health issues. According to www.drugabuse.gov , all steroid users could get liver damage, heart disease, changes in cholesterol, and weight loss. While (conjunctions) males will develop breast, have shrinking testicals,
Steroids are very unhealthy for multiple parts of the human body, many health issues can arise from the use of such a drug. Primarily, the users’ continuous use of the drug will deplete the body’s ability to produce testosterone
