When Poe was 3 years old he lost his parents and got adopted by John Allan. When he became a young adult he attended to the university of Virginia. But, he left UV and joined the army. When John Allan died, Poe was discharged from the army. Even though Poe had difficulties he continued writing and publishing some of his masterpieces. Poe creates a tone and mood, using auditory imagery, characterization and repetition. To begin with, Poe has used similar tone and mood in “The Raven” and “Tale-tell heart” creating literature elements but also creating some differences in both stories.An example, of tone and mood in both stories is that he uses both characters, showing that both may be mentally unbalanced. In this analysis I want to focus on how Poe’s writing in The Raven progressively gives the reader the feeling that the narrator turns insane. How does he create the progression from a seemingly normal man to an insane one? Firstly I would like to start off with the effects of repeating the last line of each stanza in The Raven. Throughout the poem Poe follows the rhyme scheme ACBCCC ,which puts quite a heavy focus on the last lines of each stanza.

The use of hyperboles creates more suspense because the more exaggeration used grips the reader in more. Describing the Raven as “Ghastly, Grim and ancient” (8) makes the idea that the author is trying to get through, more coherent as Poe is offering more description. The way Poe repeats his “Sorrow for the lost Lenore” (2) helps embed the idea that he misses Lenore but it also makes the reader wonder where she went, why she left and why she is so important, which creates suspense. The way Poe uses repetition and pathos when he is trying to get an idea through is very prominent.

Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven” use of negative tone words and word choice effect the overall mood of the poem by making the poems very dark and gloomy mood and then in later on in the story the tone words create a very angry but sorry mood. The words used in the stanzas lead you into a creepy and chilling mood that makes the story very suspicious and alarming because it makes people feel very overwhelmed with terror and fear. The words midnight, darkness, and dreary set the tone for a dark and gloomy time because dreary means gloomy or dull and midnight and darkness, well mean dark. In stanza one it states “Once upon a midnight dreary…...”

Throughout his life, Poe had always lived through the most chaotic and evil of time. His parents died while he was 3 years old. After his parents died, he lived with another family member who never accepted him as their own son. Later on in life, Poe had served in the military and at that point he started writing poems.

In Poe’s poem, “The Raven”, he uses words such as lonely, stillness, ominous and fiery to add to the building up apprehension within the poem. In addition, he also uses repetition to create fluent yet unruffled, tragic feel for the reader.
